Chapter Six

Petal

I’ve spent the last three weeks avoiding Cade at all costs. I see him, of course, when I pick Lily up at his shop, and when he comes home from work. I always make sure that dinner is on the table so I don’t have to stay, but I’m pretty sure he’s catching on now.

Lily and Mac invite me to stay nearly every night. Lucky for me, I have the perfect excuse to leave: Dad and Roman. Although neither of them really needs me very much, so it’s lame, but it’s all I’ve got.

Cade has been pushing for me to stick around in the mornings before Lily and I leave to either go to her dance classes or a fun tot group I found. She’s made so many new friends and, it seems to me, has really come out of her shell.

Jace still whispers in my ear about Cade and me, and so does my Dad actually. I’m tempted to hit them both. Possibly with my car. Even Beckett has gotten on the bandwagon.

They’re breaking my heart down, or rather, Cade is. He touches me a lot, making my heart stop in my chest each time. Mostly, they’re accidental brushes, but I’m beginning to think they’re on purpose, too.

I want so much to allow my feelings the freedom to grow, but I’ve overheard enough of his conversations to know Cade isn’t looking for a woman. Or a mother for his children. The last thing I want is for him to believe I want to replace the mother who doesn’t deserve his babies.

“Petal?” Lily’s voice calls as she claps her hands in front of my face.

“Sorry, what did you say?” I shake my head to lose my train of thought.

“Can you fix my braid? Miss Griffin doesn’t do it very well.” The last sentence is whispered quietly to me, but she’s right. Her dance instructor isn’t the best at it. Quickly, I have a line of girls asking me to fix their braids into fishtails just like Lily’s.

With each finished girl, and every passing moment, they all tell Lily she has the best mom. Rather than it dimming her light, the sweet girl beams with pride and doesn’t correct a single one of them. I try to, but they’re gone before I can explain.

I’m sure, on some level, they know I’m not her mom because it was always her dad or uncles doing this job. But I love how innocent they are and just want to compliment her so, once again, I find myself letting it go.

“Daddy!” I hear Lily squeal and turn around to see Cade coming backstage with a small bouquet of Lilies.

“Hey, Lily-pad, I’m sorry I wasn’t here to help you get ready.” Handing them to her, he leans down to kiss the girl on the head.

“That’s okay, Daddy, Petal makes the best braids!” She twirls around to show off the one I whipped up really quick. Cade frowns before he smooths out his features.

“Looks great, kiddo.” His grin is forced as Lily is called away.
