A drawing using inorganic shapes

Project Two

LARGE DRAWING WITH INORGANIC (GEOMETRIC) SHAPES

One four-hour drawing

Materials: one, four, six, or eight sheets of 22-x 30-in paper; black pastel; plastic eraser

If you have the room and are not scared of getting messy, draw on a large scale. To do this, align the sheets of 22- x 30-in paper up to each other and run masking tape along the join.

Pick a sketch from the previous project, and draw a large format in the same proportions as the small one. Map out your chosen sketch on the large scale with line. You can apply tone to shapes – not to give the illusion of form but to show that the shape is a particular tone. You can also use tone to create contrast along edges. This tone, when used inside the shape, is called an endotropic shadow. When it is used outside the form it is called an exotropic shadow. Invent textures and patterns for shapes where appropriate. You may wish to smudge all or part of the drawing and then work light back into it with an eraser. This is a more effective way to create light areas than by leaving the paper white, because these light areas will work better with the other elements in the drawing.
