CHAPTER SEVEN
THE days flew past, and before Nick knew it the week of his sister’s wedding had arrived. Penny had asked him to be one of the ushers so there were fittings for a top hat and tails to squeeze in after work.
In a way it was a good thing that he was kept so busy because he had a legitimate reason for limiting the amount of time he spent with Leanne. They went for a drink one night, and she insisted on treating him to a meal another time, but they deliberately kept things low-key and he was grateful for that.
He’d had several sleepless nights after he’d spoken to Daniel Edwards about the changes the young man needed to make to his life. It made him feel like a hypocrite to have offered advice like that. He was very aware that he needed to make some decisions, but the thought that he might end up hurting Leanne was too painful to contemplate.
He went to collect his suit during his lunch-break the day before the wedding and arrived back at the clinic to find Leanne manning the reception desk. She was working afternoons that week because the nurse who usually worked that shift had left without giving any notice.
Nick smiled as she got up and opened the door when she saw him struggling with the suit carrier and the box containing his top hat. ‘Thanks. I don’t know how all those mums manage, hauling around buggies and kids. Just negotiating the escalators with this little lot was a nightmare!’
‘I can imagine.’ She smiled and he felt his heart give its usual little lurch when he saw the warmth in her eyes. Although they’d made every effort to keep their relationship on a platonic footing, it hadn’t changed how they felt. It made him feel all knotted up inside to see the proof of that now.
‘So it’s the big day tomorrow,’ she observed as she went back to her seat. ‘Is your sister very nervous?’
‘Not a bit.’ He dumped the hat box on the desk and grinned at her, loving the way her eyes immediately lit up. ‘I don’t know how Penny will be on the actual day, of course, but she’s fine at the moment. And so is David, amazingly enough.’
‘That’s good to hear. Is it a big wedding or just close family and friends?’
‘Huge, from what I can gather. Pen seems to have invited the world and his wife!’ He grimaced when she laughed. ‘I’m not kidding. I only hope that Dad has hired a big enough marquee to fit everyone in.’
‘Your parents are having the reception at their house?’
‘Yes. Mum and Dad have this huge house, far too big for them now that we’ve all left home. There’s plenty of room for guests to stay overnight so long as they don’t mind sharing.’
‘Sounds like fun. It must be great, being part of a big family,’ she observed wistfully.
‘Hectic, I’d call it,’ he replied, hating to see her looking even the slightest bit sad.
