Leah Darlington was an independent, feisty young woman who’d spent a lot of years making sure the wall she’d built around her feelings stayed secure. But Mitch Stafford hadn’t blasted through the wall, climbed it, or made any of the other attempts that indicated he was determined to get to Leah’s heart. Nope, not necessary because that young man simply unlocked the door and waltzed right inside. And Leah let him because she’d been taken in by the casual manner, the practical comments, and shared love of photography, nature, homemade pasta, and the peacefulness of a dark night. Now she questioned whether those shared interests were real or contrived as a result of the investigator’s report she’d found.

When a person opens her heart and trusts someone and that person disappoints her, or worse, withholds information they should have shared? Well, that causes a lot of problems, especially for someone who isn’t used to sharing or opening up about her real feelings, much less opening her heart. Pop had just listened to the sad tale involving Mitch Stafford’s notebook. Dang, but that man was in a predicament.

“He seemed so perfect.” Leah Darlington studied the uneaten pizzelle on her plate, her voice drifting off as if remembering the man and all of his perfection. “He listened, he seemed to care, and he didn’t judge. We shared so many of the same interests, but who knows?” Those hazel eyes turned bright. “Was that real or manufactured because that’s what I liked? I don’t know and it doesn’t matter what he tells me now because I can’t trust him.”

“Trust is a delicate thing and you sure are in a predicament. Of course, the young man says he meant every word of it, regrets what happened.” Pop eyeballed her an extra second and clarified in case she didn’t understand. “He regrets the part about why he was here and what he promised Josh’s dad he’d do. He also regrets not telling you up front or telling you sooner. What he doesn’t regret is you, and how he feels about you.”

“How he feels about me? What does that even mean?”

“Well, according to Mitch, it means you own his heart. The man loves you.” The scowl said she didn’t believe him and even if she ever considered believing him, it didn’t matter. “I understand you’re hurting and you have a right to that hurt, but don’t let it go on and on so all you can see is the hurt. Get mad, get your frustrations out one way or the other.” Pop shrugged, slipped her a smile. “You can get a lot of frustrations out by kneading bread. Or you can till a new patch of soil. Your choice, maybe both. And when you’re done with the frustration and the anger, hurt’s gonna be right next to it, mixed up in the tears. You might’ve already gone through all of that and a few boxes of tissues. But when it’s all done, you’ve got to take a hard look at what’s left.
