“I will not be needing anything else, Beatrice.”

Her lady’s maid curtsied. “Very good, your grace. Shall I wake you in the morning for your outing?”

“No, I think I can wake up on my own. Good night, Beatrice.”

“Good night, your grace.”

Bella wondered what the servants thought about her not sharing a bed with her husband. If they did think it odd, they were all well-trained enough not to show it. She moved over to the chair by the window. The weather had turned foul and lightning streaked across the sky briefly lighting the street below. The rain was beating hard against the window. She pulled her feet up into the chair and wrapped her arms around her knees. She had always hated storms. When she was a little girl, she had cried when thunder shook the windows of the nursery. Her nurse had tried to soothe her but nothing had helped. The next morning her father called her into his study and reprimanded her for being afraid. After that, she had been more afraid of her father, than the storms. Another flash of lightning streaked across the sky just before a loud rumble of thunder shook the house. It was going to be a long night. She walked over to the bed and climbed in pulling the covers over her. She was just about to extinguish the candle when the connecting door opened.

Her eyes widened as Charles walked over to the bed. “Why are you here?”

“The storm is going to be bad tonight.”

She narrowed her eyes. “If you think I am afraid, you can rest assured I am not.” He wore a roguish grin on his face that made her a bit apprehensive.

“I never imagined you would be.” His hand moved to the tie on his robe. “If you wish to protect your sensibilities you might want to look away.”

Her eyes widened, and he couldn’t help but grin at her distress. “You don’t mean to sleep here.”

“I do, but the last time I slept here, I was wearing my robe, and it was not very comfortable.”

Bella felt a wave of apprehension sweep over her. “You said you would not take me to your bed until I wished it.”

“You can relax, Isobel. I am just going to sleep in here with you. When I decide to take you to my bed, I promise you will have no objections.” His voice was smug and held a promise of wickedness.

“Are all dukes born this arrogant, or is it something you are taught?” She held up her hand when he once again went for the tie on his robe. “Surely you do not intend to…”

“I will keep my sleep shirt on if that makes you feel better.”

She moved further away. “I don’t think this is a good idea.”

He untied his robe and tossed it aside before climbing into the bed beside her. “You are not the only one that gets to make the rules, Isobel.” He chuckled as she moved to the far side of the bed turning her back to him.
