For Haldane, his all-encompassing reach wasn’t just a matter of spongelike retention. It was a view of the world. He saw a unity to all knowledge; he saw the same fundamental processes meshing into each other in every cross section of nature. Here was another reason he appreciated Marxism. Marx had believed exactly this, and in Private Property and Communism, he had made a prediction that sang to Haldane: “Natural science will in time incorporate into itself the science of man, just as the science of man will incorporate into itself natural science: there will be one science.”
