Chapter 16

Zoey followed Dex out the front door and into the fresh air. Fortunately, the afternoon sun wasn’t as hot as she’d expected, and she’d applied some sunscreen before coming to the ranch.

“I hope you don’t mind walking over,” he said. “The horse barn isn’t far away.”

“That works for me,” she said. “It’ll give me a chance to burn off all this rich food I’ve been consuming since I came into town.”

“I doubt you need to. You look great as you are,” he said.

Zoey’s face grew warm. “Why, thank you.”

Dex led her along the side of the house until they were walking down a paved path in the direction of a large building with sliding doors. Zoey noticed he’d slowed his strides to match hers.

Nice. She liked when a man was considerate of who he was walking with. It was one of her pet peeves and a better metric—as far as she was concerned—of how a man truly felt about a woman than what he professed to her.

As they neared, Zoey guessed the building was the horse barn. It looked like it had either been newly constructed or undergone some recent renovation with its fresh coat of paint that appeared to have never experienced the harsh winter they’d left behind a few months ago.

“Have you been around horses before?” Dex asked.

“Yes,” she said quietly. She remembered how wonderful it had been all those years ago. Well, before the incident. “But that was a long time ago.”

They reached the large barn. He unlocked the sliding doors and pushed a side open. “After you,” he said.

Zoey took a deep breath and exhaled. This was it. Time to experience heaven on earth again, or her worst nightmare, depending on how she looked at it. She gave him a small smile and entered, and Dex followed behind.

The familiar smell of sweet hay, sweaty leather, and fresh pine shavings hit her nostrils, and Zoey almost buckled. The memories came rushing back like a whirlwind, and she fought the urge to turn and run away. Instead, she took a deep breath and forced herself to look around.

The barn was one of the best she’d seen—spacious with rows and rows of horse stalls laid out in what looked like an upgraded version of the European-style stalls she’d seen before.

Each horse stall had the hinged European-style door made of steel and wood. The lower section was mostly wood framed in steel while the upper section had bars molded into a V, which gave easy access to the horses without entering the stall. The interior looked clean and pristine, not what she’d expect from a barn that had been in use for a while. There was a second-level hay loft, and freshly-packed hay bales filled the space.

“This looks really nice,” she said in a steady voice, even though her pulse was still racing.

“Thank you. It’s been newly renovated. We had a fire here a couple of months ago, so we used it as an opportunity to upgrade the space.”

“Oh, no! Hope everyone was okay.
