CHAPTER 12

Bri

They pulled up to a brand new Yukon and a Honda parked where she had taken up the space earlier. They both sat in the car frozen, knowing this meant company.

Bri was content to sit there with her as long as she needed to. There was no telling who was in there.

DeeDee was all over the place, an emotional wreck. One minute she was her usual affable self and in the next, a ball of nerves.

“Alright,” she said finally, after a long exhale. “Let’s go.”

They moved towards the house as if it were somehow suddenly haunted and truth be told, it was never a good idea to walk into a building occupied by possible evil forces.

The door was unlocked. They moved in the direction of the noise, towards the family room near the kitchen to find a full house.

“DeeDee,” someone shouted.

“Wait a damn minute. What are y’all doing here?”

“We were invited, like you,” a woman with big wild hair stood up to greet her.

“Hey cuz,” she said, giving her a massive hug. “Look at you.”

“It’s been a minute right?”

“The whole crew is here?” DeeDee asked, looking for everyone.

“Yep. All six of us.”

“The boys have gotten so big. Hey Sev. Hey Nick,” she said to the two little boys lost on their devices.

“Come say hey to DeeDee, y’all.”

“Leave ‘em. It’s cool.”

“Tony’s over there,” she said.

He was lounged out on the sectional, fully reclined with his socks on and feet crossed as if he owned the place.

“How ‘bout them Saints,” he said looking up from his phone. “Who dat!”

Renette shook her head. “You can’t say that if you’re not a fan, Tony.”

“But it’s fun.”

DeeDee inked out a weak smile. “Still a clown I see. Where’s Little Miss Denaya?”

“Over there by the fireplace being sixteen and rude.”

“Hey Dennie,” DeeDee said, waving wildly. She waved back with little energy before diving back into her phone.

“Oof. Somebody’s mad. Sixteen already though. That’s crazy.”

“I know right.”

“Well, I’d like you to meet Bri, my fiancée,” DeeDee said, reaching for her and then moving her forward as if showing off her shiny new toy. “Babe, this is my cousin Renette.”

She bore a strong resemblance to Monae, making it easy to connect them as siblings.

“Nice to meet you. I recognize you from the pictures,” she said. “Likewise. Beautiful family.”

“Aw thank you. That’s sweet of you to say.”

“It’s just the truth,” Tony said from where he sat.

“Is your mom here too?” DeeDee asked.

“Yeah. She caught a ride with us. Drove up from Dallas to Houston herself.”

“Well let me go say hey,” she said, taking Bri’s hand into hers. She teetered behind her feeling slightly overwhelmed, especially with their small tiff at the restaurant. Still, she was excited to meet these people she called blood-family.

The smell of heated spices wafted toward them as they entered the kitchen, the aroma hung in the air so thick, she could taste it.

DeeDee took in a deep breath, brought the smell towards her with a wave of her hands. “Smells good up in here.”

“That’s to be expected,” Ma Divine said with some arrogance.
