Chapter 15

There was no one left downstairs. No one that she could use as an excuse to avoid this confrontation with Brad. All six feet of hard muscle before her now. She was so mad, and hurt, and disillusioned; yet she loved him and that’s what made the hurt so much worse. How could he have treated her as if she didn’t matter? Even though she knew in her head that wasn’t exactly the truth of the situation, her heart didn’t get that message. And when she tried to step around him, he took another step and blocked her way and then another until he was right in front of her and she couldn’t slip past him.

“Em, please.”

The softness in his voice brought a sting of tears to her eyes. She could hear how bad he felt.

“Brad, I love you, but you brought her into our house, on Trevor’s birthday no less. Do you have any idea how you made me feel? I felt dismissed, and I was reliving the nightmare of when she first showed up here. Do you remember? When I first came to work here and there was you and me, and then Crystal came back. She nearly destroyed me, Brad with the games, and the disrespect and the stress...it nearly destroyed us. You remember all the lies she told, her deception. What she did with Trevor, and yet you allowed her to walk back in here tonight.”

He was staring at her, his expression filled with emotion, deep, remorseful, and upset, whether for him or her she didn’t know. “I’m sorry, Em, it caught me off guard. I never expected her to show up here again. She seemed different, and she never showed any interest in Trevor before, but here she was on his birthday, remembering his birthday and she just wanted to see him. I don’t know why I said yes, but I did. I couldn’t undo it even if I wanted to.”

He put his hands on her shoulders and she loved it when he touched her, but right now she was so mad and hurt that any touch of his became like gasoline on a fire. She tried to push his arms away.

“Stop fighting me, Em. This is me, I love you.”

“I know that!” She shouted.

He dropped his arms and then gestured as if he didn’t understand her. “What is it then? She’s gone, can’t you just let it go?”

She couldn’t believe he was that dense. Brad Friessen wasn’t a stupid man. He frustrated her at times, he was overbearing, he was strong and opinionated, and she believed he’d always had her back—until today. Didn’t he understand that letting that snake back into their home had just opened a can of worms that couldn’t be ignored?
