SABINE

It had either been five hours, or about my fifth time around the sun, because after one shot of liquor, I was drunk out of my mind.

My head spun, and I could not stare at the ceiling any longer without feeling the urge to vomit. I had survived many things in my lifespan, but this was actual torture. I reached down and grabbed the base of my thigh; it was heavy as I shifted it to the edge of the bed so my foot could hit the ice-cold floor.

I groaned as I rolled over and felt absolute betrayal when I hit the air instead. My back slapped onto the marble floor. I knew that I should have been worried when I did not feel the impact of it, but I had greater issues at hand. I grabbed onto the nightstand, my hand knocking over the stacks of books Keahi had left for me as I slid my knees underneath my hips so I could find—water.

The fine silver goblet shined like it had bottled the rain directly from the clouds. My mouth watered as I cupped both hands around the stem, careful not to disturb it as I slid it to the edge. I struggled as I lifted myself just enough to place my bottom lip against the rim and tipped it back to find the sweet relief of nothing. The empty cup was mocking me. I cursed as I leaned back against the frame of the bed and accepted my fate.

No one had exactly mentioned I needed to stay put in my room during the night, but as I maneuvered through the hallways, it seemed someone should have.

I felt my hearing succumb to my paranoia again, but I did not run. I could not run. Even if I felt bold enough to give up and inevitably face plant across the floor and leave myself there for someone to peel me up in the morning, I did not want to risk alerting Keahi again.

If I had known where the kitchen was, it would have been the first place I went to—because Gods, what I would do for a piece of bread right now.

I had just turned the corner when the whispers were no longer a figment of my imagination, and I ducked hard in between the double doors of the training room before they could see me. Sweat trickled down my spine as two shadows appeared against the underside of the doors.

Elias’s voice broke first. “If you do not tell her, I swear to you, I will. I will not let your fear get in the way. Did you really think I would not find out?”

Someone’s in trouble. I suppressed a laugh into my palm—wait, they’re talking about me. . . I think.

“I am well aware of that, uncle, since I saw you gave her my notebook,” Keahi spit out in a harsh whisper.

“Do not pin this on me. I saw the letter Emric wrote back to you,” Elias snapped, holding his ground.
