Chapter 12

By the time we got back to the house the number of family members present had grown. Lisa of course was the star attraction. I think you could safely say she was enjoying her new found status. After being physically beaten by her deranged mother then forced to hide from killers, not that she really knew that’s what they were, all this love must have seemed heavenly.

I was introduced as Lisa’s mother, how many of them knew of my real role I had no idea but pretty well all were friendly, if perhaps some more than others. I just hoped I wouldn’t be expected to remember names.

By eight thirty I was feeling drained. We’d enjoyed a good meal but the combination of wine, a ton of food and incessant chatter had worn me out. On top of that I was badly missing my own family, at the very least I wanted to speak to them but I’d given my word to Ralph so I would have to resist the temptation. Lisa I noticed was also beginning to wilt so after taking what seemed an eternity to say goodnight all-round we climbed the stairs. GD stayed to represent Team Moretti and finish his wine.

It was still dark when I was awakened by a hand clamped over my mouth. I tried to move my legs but using plastic ties, a second attacker had secured them at the ankles. The same was now being done to my wrists. I couldn’t see the face of either of them but I could clearly see that the pistol pointed at my head was complete with a silencer. I was petrified.

The one with his hand over my mouth leaned in and whispered in my ear, ‘Im going to take my hand away and tape your mouth. If you scream or make any sound at all I’ll shoot you first the little girl second. Are we clear on that?’

It had all been said by someone with an American accent. Eyes wide with fear I managed to nod and his hand was quickly and efficiently replaced by a wide strip of tape. They’d done this kind of thing before and were clearly expert at terrorizing the defenseless.

To add to my horror I realized the strip of tape was the only thing I was wearing. It had been warm when I came to bed so I hadn’t bothered with a nightie. Is this what they were here for? I shuddered at the thought of what might come next.

I tried desperately to make out the features of the one who’d taped my mouth. I couldn’t. I hoped the second attacker would come into view. He didn’t. If I survived this I wasn’t going to be able to provide the slightest shred of useful information.

Attacker One leaned in again with a whisper, ‘Now you’re over the initial shock I’m gonna to remove the tape and ask you a question and lady, any noise and you’re dead you understand?’

I hoped I wouldn’t be too scared to answer, assuming I had any answers.
