Shifting the sleeping child in his arms, Nick waited for Chessa to illuminate the darkened house, then quietly followed her upstairs. Bobby groaned softly as Nick laid him on the bed, then immediately drifted into a sound sleep, not even twitching as his mother removed his shoes and socks.
She pulled a pair of small pajamas out from under the pillow, little white pjâs covered with space ships and cartoon characters. Nick smiled. Heâd never owned such snazzy pajamas as a child. In fact, he couldnât recall owning any pajamas at all. Rather, heâd slept in his underwear and a large, torn T-shirt handed down from his father.
It had suited him well enough, since he hadnât known at the time that other kids slept in fleecy flannels studded with cool cartoons. He was glad his son possessed such pajamas.
His son possessed something even more valuable, something priceless beyond measure: a motherâs love. Nick, too, had been given that priceless gift, and he cherished every moment, every memory of the woman who had caressed his hair just as Chessa now caressed Bobbyâs.
Fascinated, Nick watched this incredible woman smooth her sonâs tousled mop, then glide her soft fingertips delicately across his brow, down his cheek, along chin and jaw as if memorizing every nuance of her childâs beloved face. A motherâs love, the most precious gift in the universe. His son was truly blessed.
Just as Nick had been truly blessed.
A sudden sting behind his eyes turned him away. He felt like an intruder, a voyeur to this loving interaction of a mother with her sleeping child. Heaviness settled into his chest, wedged in his throat. Emotion, he realized, and was surprised by its strength. Backing away quietly, Nick went downstairs and waited.
Moments later Chessa joined him. Her eyes were moist, her smile serene. âThis has been the happiest day of his life,â she said quietly. âThank you.â
Nick could barely remember what his life had been like before Chessa and Bobby were a part of it. âItâs been the happiest day of my life, too. Iâm the one who should be thanking you.â Reaching out, he lifted her hand, cherished its subtle softness between his palms. âAnd I do thank you, Chessa. I thank you for our beautiful son, and for being the wonderful woman that you are.â
A flicker of appreciation warmed her eyes, then heated into something more intimate. A quiet passion, mingled with curiosity and a touch of awe. âYou are the best thing that has ever happened to my son.â
âNo, you are.â He raised her hand to his lips, was thrilled by her subtle shiver as he placed a tender kiss in the center of her palm. âYou are his strength, his hope, his joy and his solace. You are his mother. You are his life.â
For a moment Chessa gazed up in wonder, so still that Nick was afraid sheâd stopped breathing. Then her chest shuddered, and a flash of white appeared as her teeth scraped her lower lip. She searched his eyes as if seeing something profound, something sheâd never seen before.
