ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

The second half of the twentieth century effectively began with Jackson Pollock arriving at his enormously influential drip paintings after years of Surrealist fascination with how visual art might convey a sense of encountering secrets, and relishing their hold on him.14 Pollock’s movement from paintings like Guardians of the Secret to the full action painting of Autumn Rhythm shifted from speculating on a secret the artist cannot possess to making the energy and distribution of force within the painting the actual revelation of what had begun as hidden and inaccessible. Pollock then offered another extension of the work of art as a living object. His drip paintings reversed Surrealism’s investments in trying to provide images for the unconscious life so that they can pursue a painterly surface that has no secrets and needs no hidden depths of meaning. While Malevich and Mondrian built their non-iconic constructions out of powerful contrasts between figure and ground, Pollock established an all-over design that forced all the elements of the painting to be on the same plane. Line is not drawn on a background but dripped, so that background and foreground offer continually shifting aspects of a single constructive process. This process destroys the possibility of any shape taking on impersonal and universal value. Everything depends on individual creativity and the energy it has the capacity to sustain.
