It’s Brett. Lucy gave me your number. How are you doing? I think we should talk soon.

I wonder what Jen is thinking now and what she’ll do once she gets the message. My stomach is churning with nervousness because I just want to know where we stand. I worry that she wants nothing to do with me, but I hope she responds quickly so I won’t have to wonder for days. She probably doesn’t even know we aren’t legally married. I leave my phone on the table with the screen up so I can see the notification when she texts me back.

“Okay, message is sent. All I can do is wait.”

“Are you nervous?”

“I’m very nervous. I never thought I would go through another divorce, or, in this case, break a commitment ceremony.”

“Think positive, Brett. She may not want that at all. Jen may want to have your kids and live happily ever after.”

“That’s true. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

“What do you like about Jen so much?”

Before answering Alex, I grab another breadstick, and the pizza comes shortly after. “I love her bubbly personality, and when I’m around her, she makes me feel good. I know I haven’t been around her for a long time, but I just have a gut feeling on this one. And, of course, I can’t forget, she’s beautiful. Her gorgeous smile can light up a room.”

“It seems that you really like her. I hope everything works out for you.”

“Thanks. I hope so too.”

By now, I’ve glanced over at my phone several times. I have several notifications, but no response from Jen. I am a little disappointed, but I can’t expect her to be on the phone all the time just waiting for my text messages. Luckily, I can see the front desk from here, and I haven’t seen her check out yet. She could still be up in her room.

I grab two slices of the hot pizza, and the cheese is stringy as I put it on my plate. “So, Alex, what about you–have you been dating anyone? Anything serious?”

“I’m single. I’ve been on a couple of dates, but nothing serious. A couple of ladies at the wedding caught my eye, but no phone numbers were exchanged. I just figure if it’s meant to be, then we’ll run into each other sometime in the future. I have so much to do at the law firm anyways.”

“That’s a good way to look about it. Very laid back and relaxed. The way I see it, if you try too hard to find a romantic partner, nothing good ever comes of it.”

“Exactly. So how are you liking the pizza? It’s so good, isn’t it?”

“Hot, but so good. I’d come back to the hotel, just for the food.”

For the next few hours, Alex and I stay and chat at the restaurant, enjoying our pizza and breadsticks and drinking a lot of water. Surprisingly, the restaurant never got too busy, and the server didn’t mind us saying for a bit.
