Chapter Sixteen
âWhat in the name of all thatâs holy are you suggestinâ, lass?â Aleck stared at her as if sheâd lost her mind.
âYou donât have to do it.â Tansy reached under her shirt and fastened her bra. âBut itâs a way for us to end up in my apartment for a couple of hours.â
Oh. âThen Iâd best hear what youâve cooked up.â
âQuinnâs road is washed out and his hardly ever floods, which means Wild Creekâs will be way worse. Itâll be a while before vehicles can drive on either one. All four grandparents are saddling up to ride over here to check on the new family.â
âWhat about the wee bairn, Noel? Are they bringinâ her?â
She shook her head. âDonât have to. Cody and Faith made it to Quinnâs last night. They got stuck on his road and had to hike the rest of the way, but theyâre with Noel.â
âWell, thatâs good.â
âIt is, but Rory and Damaris are still in town and they really want to come home this morning. Damaris needs her computer and Rory wants to be here to help with barn chores. The work is more complicated when it rains this much.â
âSo Kendra asked you to take them a couple of horses to ride home on?â
âExactly. She already checked with them and theyâd be very happy if Iâd agree to do that. I can borrow their truck to drive to the GG and when the road dries out, theyâll bring mine to town and weâll switch out again.â
He gazed at her, clearly turning it all over in his mind. âAnd how long do you think itâll take for the road to dry out?â
âI donât know. I canât hear the rain anymore, so maybe the stormâs over. If the sun comes out, the road might be dry enough later today. Kendra could answer that better than I can.â
âA ride to town sounds like more than a wee outing.â
âActually, itâs not. Thereâs a shortcut to town through the woods. Kendra and I have gone that way lots of times when we felt like getting a treat at Pie in the Sky.â
Aleckâs brow furrowed. âHow long would it take?â
âWe can make it in under twenty minutes, even going slow. I know youâre uneasy about the riding, but think of the advantages. At the end of the ride weâll pick up Roryâs truck and be in my apartment about ten minutes later.â
Heat flared in his gaze. âThat part soundsââ
âPure barry?â
âAye, it does. But if my baws have been jostled every which way on the back of that horse because I donât know the proper way to ride, I might not be in any shape to enjoy it.â
âI promise I wonât let that happen. I have a stake in the outcome so Iâll keep checking on you to make sure youâre feeling comfy.â
He still looked unconvinced.
âThis wonât be as hard as you think. Way easier than a caber toss. Like I told Kendra, youâre an athlete. Twenty minutes is doable, even for a beginner.
