Chapter Sixteen

Brendan was adorable when he was embarrassed. Jo couldn’t resist teasing him, either. “What exactly did you and Andy talk about when I was in the kitchen with Seth and Ida?”

“It wasn’t like he made it sound.” He rubbed the back of his neck.

“And how was that?”

“Like I’d mouthed off about us havin’ sex for the first time tonight.”

“Then how did he know?”

“He asked me if you’d mind a little dust and if your place was neat as a pin.”

“What did you say?”

“I had to admit I’d never been in your condo. One thing led to another and he figured out this was our first night together. He just wanted it to be nice.”

“Which it was. Is.”

“Except we may be trapped here for the whole weekend. We’re at the whim of those critters.”

“You don’t like that, do you?”

“Not much. I was relieved that we had a place to stay and hopeful Seth could fix my truck. But fixin’ my truck won’t matter if we can’t get to it.” He buttoned his coat and tucked his phone in his pocket before walking toward the window. “Maybe Andy’s wrong and there’s only the one lonesome bull out there.”

“Can you tell?” She stayed where she was, unwilling to come face-to-face with that giant creature again. Let Brendan gaze into the darkness. The shock of seeing a scary monster in the window hadn’t worn off yet.

Cupping his hands around his face, he peered outside. “Oh, I can tell, all right, even though it’s still snowin’ like the devil. We’re not leavin’ until they decide to.” He sounded frustrated.

“So not a loner?”

“Not even close. There’s at least twenty of ’em out there. One is smaller than the rest. Probably a calf.”

“What are they doing?”

“Looks like they’re settlin’ in for the night.”

“Then maybe we should do the same.” During the call to Andy she’d buttoned her coat. Not that he could have seen her, but psychologically she’d wanted to be halfway decent for that conversation. Laying her phone on the easy chair, she undid the buttons. “It’s not like we’re going anywhere now, anyway.”

“That’s for damned sure.” He turned away from the window, clearly irritated by the situation. Then he paused and his breath caught. “I’m an idiot for complainin’.” He tossed his phone on the table and started toward her. “Any guy would thank his lucky stars if he could be stranded with you.”

The heat in his gaze sent moisture straight to her lady parts. “You’re a sweet-talking man, Brendan Sawyer.”

“You’re a sweet-lovin’ woman, Jo Fielding.” He spared a quick glance for the fire. “You got that goin’ real good.” He slipped his hands inside her coat, circled her waist and drew her close. “What do you say we go back to bed?”

“Who’ll tend the fire?”

“I will. Right after I tend to you.” Cupping her bottom, he picked her up.

“Whoa. Wasn’t expecting to be carried there.” She wrapped her legs around his hips.

“Just showin’ off.” He turned and made for the bed. “I’ve heard women like the strong, silent type.
