Chapter Sixteen
Brendan was adorable when he was embarrassed. Jo couldnât resist teasing him, either. âWhat exactly did you and Andy talk about when I was in the kitchen with Seth and Ida?â
âIt wasnât like he made it sound.â He rubbed the back of his neck.
âAnd how was that?â
âLike Iâd mouthed off about us havinâ sex for the first time tonight.â
âThen how did he know?â
âHe asked me if youâd mind a little dust and if your place was neat as a pin.â
âWhat did you say?â
âI had to admit Iâd never been in your condo. One thing led to another and he figured out this was our first night together. He just wanted it to be nice.â
âWhich it was. Is.â
âExcept we may be trapped here for the whole weekend. Weâre at the whim of those critters.â
âYou donât like that, do you?â
âNot much. I was relieved that we had a place to stay and hopeful Seth could fix my truck. But fixinâ my truck wonât matter if we canât get to it.â He buttoned his coat and tucked his phone in his pocket before walking toward the window. âMaybe Andyâs wrong and thereâs only the one lonesome bull out there.â
âCan you tell?â She stayed where she was, unwilling to come face-to-face with that giant creature again. Let Brendan gaze into the darkness. The shock of seeing a scary monster in the window hadnât worn off yet.
Cupping his hands around his face, he peered outside. âOh, I can tell, all right, even though itâs still snowinâ like the devil. Weâre not leavinâ until they decide to.â He sounded frustrated.
âSo not a loner?â
âNot even close. Thereâs at least twenty of âem out there. One is smaller than the rest. Probably a calf.â
âWhat are they doing?â
âLooks like theyâre settlinâ in for the night.â
âThen maybe we should do the same.â During the call to Andy sheâd buttoned her coat. Not that he could have seen her, but psychologically sheâd wanted to be halfway decent for that conversation. Laying her phone on the easy chair, she undid the buttons. âItâs not like weâre going anywhere now, anyway.â
âThatâs for damned sure.â He turned away from the window, clearly irritated by the situation. Then he paused and his breath caught. âIâm an idiot for complaininâ.â He tossed his phone on the table and started toward her. âAny guy would thank his lucky stars if he could be stranded with you.â
The heat in his gaze sent moisture straight to her lady parts. âYouâre a sweet-talking man, Brendan Sawyer.â
âYouâre a sweet-lovinâ woman, Jo Fielding.â He spared a quick glance for the fire. âYou got that goinâ real good.â He slipped his hands inside her coat, circled her waist and drew her close. âWhat do you say we go back to bed?â
âWhoâll tend the fire?â
âI will. Right after I tend to you.â Cupping her bottom, he picked her up.
âWhoa. Wasnât expecting to be carried there.â She wrapped her legs around his hips.
âJust showinâ off.â He turned and made for the bed. âIâve heard women like the strong, silent type.
