Griffin waited down the block and around the corner from Toniâs parentsâ house. Sheâd passed him ten minutes ago, so she should be showing up soon. He half-hated the secrecy of their relationship, and half-loved it. That half liked sneaking around in the dark to kiss her, and hiding under his blankets at night to text her, as if he were one of the fifteen-year-old boys he mentored at camp.
Heâd told her about Mikeâs mom after the boy had opened up at lunch on Thursday. His side of the story did make the mother seem neglectful, especially when Griffin asked about food in the house and Mike had said they barely had any.
Heâd wanted to ask Mike how heâd paid for the three week camp, which was the most expensive one. Heâd wanted to give him ten thousand dollars and tell him to order his groceries and put it on Griffinâs debit card.
But heâd learned his first year at Camp Clear Creek that he couldnât save anyone. Money fixed a lot of things thoughâ¦
âHey,â Toni said, interrupting his thoughts as she opened the passenger door and climbed into the cab of the truck. She wore a smile and the same clothes heâd seen her in on Thursday. Short swim skirt, with a flowy cover-up she now had buttoned.
âReady for this?â he asked. Heâd put two kayaks from the camp in the back of his truck that morning, after properly checking them out.
âSo ready.â She buckled her seatbelt, and added, âMy parents are doing pretty good today.â
âThatâs great, sweetheart,â he said.
âHowâs Mike?â
Griffin exhaled heavily as he got the truck in gear and back on the road. âI think heâs dreading going home.â
âI called his mother on Friday, but she didnât answer.â
Griffin glanced over at her, unsurprised to catch a look of concern on Toniâs face. âWhatâs the next step, then?â
âIâll call again,â she said. âAnd those are not fun phone calls to make.â
âIâm sure they arenât.â And he hated putting her in that position.
âIf I canât get in touch with her, Iâll call child services,â she said. âIâll have to report it anyway, but Iâd like to say I was able to speak to her and get some sort of promise that sheâd pay the bills and make sure there was food in the house.â
âHeâs only fifteen,â Griffin said. âWhen I was fifteen, I was fishing and riding motorcycles down ravines.â
âMotorcycles, huh?â Toni grinned at him, that flirtatious glint in her eye. âSounds about right.â
âI worked plenty, too,â he said. âFour or five hours every day, sometimes before the sun was up.â Heâd hated drawing the early morning feedings, and as heâd gotten older, he realized his father was always up then tooâand he stayed out until the last chore on the ranch was done too. How heâd done it, Griffin didnât know.
âDo you like the ranch?â Toni asked, pretty much the same question running through Griffinâs own mind.
âYeah, sure,â he said lightly. âI like it just fine.â
âBut youâre not passionate about it.
