Camden scanned the private room. The space was packed, just a sea of people. Typically, a crowded party wouldn’t have been his thing. He preferred more intimate settings for his socializing, such that it was. Yet, he had to admit, as the music of animated conversations and the peals of laughter swirled around him, the Colton family was a happy crew.

It was totally opposite from his family. Camden was the only child of a father who’d died too soon. His mother, all these years later, was still wrapped in a cocoon of grief. A pang of jealousy filled his chest, gone as quick as it came. Still, Camden couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to be a part of such a large and boisterous clan.

His gaze was drawn to Grace. She stood with her cousin, Melissa, and a group of other women. They all favored each other—hair, eyes, nose—and he assumed they were more of the Coltons.

“Hey, my man,” said a familiar voice. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

Camden turned toward the greeting. It was Troy Colton, Grace’s brother. He was almost as tall as Camden but had broader shoulders. From the looks of his rumpled suit and loose tie, Camden guessed that the other man had come to the party right after work. Then again, Camden had on a suit, worn all day, as well.

“Troy,” he said, holding out his hand to shake. The two men had worked on the Randall Bowe case, Troy trying to find the forensic scientist, Camden trying to find out why he got away with so much. “I gave Grace a ride over to the party. She invited me to stay.

“I’m glad she did.”

“How’s Evangeline?” Camden asked, mentioning the former ADA and Troy’s love.

“Busy. She’ll be here later and will be happy to see you.”

“It’ll be great to see her, too.”

Then, the conversation moved, as it always did with cops, to work. Troy asked, “What’re you working on?”

“Aside from Bowe?” Did the GGPD detective not know that Camden was looking into last night’s shooting? Or was he trying to gauge what Camden would say? “I’m working on what happened with Grace.”

Troy glanced over his shoulder. He watched Grace for a moment, before turning back to Camden. “How’s she doing?”

“Your sister’s tough and smart.” Camden pressed his lips together before he said anything that might give away his true feelings.

“Any leads on those witnesses?”

“None at all.” The bartender slid two beers across the bar, and Camden picked up the glasses. “And what about you? What’re you working on these days?”

“All my time is spent on the Bowe case. You know Randall texted Melissa a while back.”

Camden did. He nodded and took a sip of beer. “He wants to talk to his brother.”

“It’s been my job to find him.”

“Any luck?”

“None at all,” he said, echoing Camden’s words. “I’ve talked to my cousin Bryce. He’s with the FBI. Bryce put out feelers with the US Marshals for Randall’s brother, Baldwin. So far, nothing’s turned up.
