Chapter Six

LATER THAT EVENING, Jessica was curled up at home with a cup of cinnamon tea, perusing the gossip columns online. The media had crowned her the “Runaway Dumpee.” And she was mostly garnering sympathy from fans on online forums. She had even checked her email, which was flooded with sympathy messages, questions about her whereabouts, and emails from her producers wondering when she would be back from vacation?

All of this came as no surprise to Jessica, who had expected no less. The only real surprise came in the form of a picture of the mayor, Dean Adams, holding Jessica after having helped her up from the fall. They were staring into each other’s eyes. It was clearly her in the picture. The headline, “Runaway Dumpee on the Rebound?” was less than flattering. The article below speculated that she was involved with the new mayor of Pebble Shores, Dean Adams. An unknown source claimed that the two had been “spending a great deal of time together,” and that he too was recovering from a “recent breakup with his high school sweetheart, who he had been with for over a decade,” She cringed as she shut down her laptop. This was the very last thing she wanted. And she knew that after Dean’s whole speech about not wanting publicity or press for Pebble Shores, he wouldn’t be pleased with this headline.

A knock on the door disrupted her train of thoughts.

“Come in,” Jessica said.

Her mother opened the door. “Hey sweets. Your dad and I were going to head down to the annual sleigh ride that’s taking place on the beach. There’s actually enough snow for them to do it this year! What do you say?”

“I don’t know,” Jessica said, pulling her knees into her chest. “I don’t want to risk another opportunity for the paparazzi.” Her mother came over and sat down on her bed.

“Jessica, you can’t live your life in fear. Those tabloids are going to say what they want to say. And hiding out isn’t going to stop them from saying bad things. The best you can do is ignore them and live your life the best way possible.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Jessica admitted. “But...”

“But what?”

“But I have nothing to wear,” Jessica said, burying her head into her knees.

Her mother rolled her eyes. “Jessica, look at this mountain of clothing!” her mother exclaimed.

“Yeah, but all my boots have heels. And I already skidded on the snow in them. And nothing I have is warm enough,” she said, glancing at the piles of paper-thin blouses and camisoles.

“Why don’t you take a look in your old drawer? I’m sure there will be something of yours that still fits.”

Jessica walked over to her old drawer. She opened it and immediately saw her favorite old sweater. No, it wasn’t anywhere near as stylish as her silkier blouses. But she would certainly feel comfortable.

“Okay,” Jessica agreed. “I’ll come.”

Her mother let out a small, “Yippee.”

Jessica got dressed, finally putting on a pair of her old winter boots that she found in the garage.
