After thoroughly exploring the five-and-dime, doing more window shopping, listening to a Renaissance trio sing carols, and watching a glassblower make Christmas ornaments for a street fair, Maggie saw John’s optimism, and she found his joy contagious.

“What do you say we grab a bite here in town?” John asked.

“I thought I was going to cook tonight.” Maggie realized she’d been looking forward to it. One more thing she knew about herself: she liked to cook.

“Maybe tomorrow. It’s getting late, and we haven’t even stopped for groceries yet.” John waved a hand upward to indicate the sky. “Today kind of got away from me.”

It was completely dark already. She hadn’t noticed. “But what about the kids?”

“Bunny texted that they got hungry, so she made a pot of spaghetti. Now they’re making popcorn and getting ready to watch a Christmas special.”

“I am a little hungry.” It seemed like she was often hungry. Did she always eat like this and have an extraordinary metabolism, or was the hunger a temporary side effect of her head injury? Either way, she did like food.

“How about this,” John said. “We let someone else cook for us tonight. I need to run an errand in the morning anyway, so I’ll take your list and stop by the grocery store then. You can cook up a storm tomorrow night.”

Tomorrow night. Would she still be here tomorrow, not knowing who she was? That was distressing to think about. But so was the idea that she wouldn’t be here tomorrow, that she wouldn’t be cooking for John and the kids. That she’d go back to some other life and never see them again.

“You’re clenching your hands,” he said.

She looked down. “You’re right. Am I a worrier?”

“Deep breath. Now let it out.”

She did, then smiled sheepishly at him.

“Better?” he asked.

She nodded. “What were you saying about dinner?”

“Come on, let me treat you. We’ll think about tomorrow tomorrow.”
