After thoroughly exploring the five-and-dime, doing more window shopping, listening to a Renaissance trio sing carols, and watching a glassblower make Christmas ornaments for a street fair, Maggie saw Johnâs optimism, and she found his joy contagious.
âWhat do you say we grab a bite here in town?â John asked.
âI thought I was going to cook tonight.â Maggie realized sheâd been looking forward to it. One more thing she knew about herself: she liked to cook.
âMaybe tomorrow. Itâs getting late, and we havenât even stopped for groceries yet.â John waved a hand upward to indicate the sky. âToday kind of got away from me.â
It was completely dark already. She hadnât noticed. âBut what about the kids?â
âBunny texted that they got hungry, so she made a pot of spaghetti. Now theyâre making popcorn and getting ready to watch a Christmas special.â
âI am a little hungry.â It seemed like she was often hungry. Did she always eat like this and have an extraordinary metabolism, or was the hunger a temporary side effect of her head injury? Either way, she did like food.
âHow about this,â John said. âWe let someone else cook for us tonight. I need to run an errand in the morning anyway, so Iâll take your list and stop by the grocery store then. You can cook up a storm tomorrow night.â
Tomorrow night. Would she still be here tomorrow, not knowing who she was? That was distressing to think about. But so was the idea that she wouldnât be here tomorrow, that she wouldnât be cooking for John and the kids. That sheâd go back to some other life and never see them again.
âYouâre clenching your hands,â he said.
She looked down. âYouâre right. Am I a worrier?â
âDeep breath. Now let it out.â
She did, then smiled sheepishly at him.
âBetter?â he asked.
She nodded. âWhat were you saying about dinner?â
âCome on, let me treat you. Weâll think about tomorrow tomorrow.â
