Elliott
âLetâs go, Elliott, itâs time to wake up,â Adam said, shaking my shoulder.
My eyelids fluttered as I started to wake. Almost as though weights were attached to them, they drifted back shut.
Adam gripped my blanket and pulled it down. âCome on, youâre not staying in bed all day again.â
My body shuddered in the absence of its warm cocoon. I glanced over at the alarm clock on my nightstand. The bright illuminating figures burned my eyes. Reaching for the blanket at the bottom of the bed, I tugged it back over me. I rolled over to my side and pointed my back towards him, hoping he would take the hint. âItâs only eight. Too early. Need sleep.â
Adam exhaled and his footsteps trailed away from the bed.
I nestled back into the warmth of my pillow and started drifting back to sleep.
Suddenly, a glaring light pierced through the shadow of my eyelids. Adamâs voice spoke again. âFirst of all, itâs almost eleven, and secondly, you were supposed to meet me at seven for coffee. You know, for breakfast? Do you remember what breakfast is?â
A surge of guilt rushed through me and my eyes darted open. I turned back around and checked the alarm clock again, this time wiping the sleep from my eyes. Shit, he was right, it was already eleven. âMy bad, dude.â I apologized. âI must have shut off my alarm when it went off this morning.â
âYou know, itâs all right to feel like shit after a breakup, but itâs not an excuse to push away everyone else in your life.â
Annoyed that he thought I was just making up an excuse, I rolled my eyes and sat up in my bed. It had been a couple weeks since Clay and I had split up, and while it did hurt, I certainly wasnât allowing it to consume me. âIâm not pushing anyone away,â I fired back. âLook, itâs no big deal. Just let me wash up and get changed and we can go for coffee now.â
Adam took a seat at the edge of the bed and let out a sigh. âItâs fine dude, we can just do it another day. Seriously though, you may not feel like youâre pushing, but it certainly feels that way from the other side.â
I stretched my arms above my head and let out a yawn. The only thing I wanted to do less than talk about my breakup was to talk about it before I even got out of bed. Still, Adam was my friend and I didnât want him to feel like I was treating him as any less. âIâm sorry if thatâs what I made you think, but I promise Iâm perfectly fine with the relationship being over.â
Just then, my temple started to throb. I placed a few fingers on either side of my head and massaged small circles of pressure. My eyes squinted as I became more aware of just how brightly the outside light was now shining through the window. âMind shutting the blinds?â I groaned.
