Lily had passed Ella’s message on to Hayley, who’d arranged a meeting between Jemima and Charlie. Leo was going too, along with Charlie’s partner, Kacey. Hayley and her husband, Phil, would also be there, and Jemima had asked Ella to go with them too. Luckily Lily had responded to her messages despite still being away on her holiday of a lifetime and Hayley had set the meeting up for the day after they got back.

Normally she’d have questioned whether she’d be intruding, and the last thing Ella wanted was for Leo to think she and Jemima were ganging up on him. But the truth was that Ella wanted to be there for herself. Hearing first-hand from people who’d taken different decisions about starting a family felt like an opportunity she couldn’t miss. Muscular dystrophy might be completely different to multiple sclerosis, but from what Ella had read, the prognosis for some types of MD could be as hard to predict as MS. Having IVF was a difficult decision for Jemima and Leo, but at least they’d known the extent of Leo’s disability before they started the treatment. It was all going to be a guessing game for her and Dan.

‘Thank you so much for arranging this, it means so much to Jemima.’ Ella had spotted Hayley as soon as she’d got out of her car. They were all meeting at Charlie and Kacey’s house, which was on the outskirts of Port Tremellien. It meant that Leo and Jemima could see for themselves the sort of adaptations the couple had made to make life easier for everyone when their little boy, Jasper, had arrived.

‘It’s no problem at all. I think Charlie is pleased to have the chance to share his story. He still tries to persuade me to go for it sometimes and try for a baby, but then I tell him about the next three cruises I’ve got my eye on and he knows he’s flogging a dead horse! This is Phil, by the way.’ Hayley gestured towards her husband, who was lifting up the ramp of their car to shut the back doors. ‘Phil, this is Ella.’

‘Nice to meet you.’ Phil had the sort of smile Ella couldn’t help mirroring and an even tan, quite a while before it would be T-shirt weather on the Cornish Atlantic coast. She’d have been able to tell that it hadn’t been long since his last holiday, even if she hadn’t known all about the trip Phil and Hayley had just taken.

‘Good to meet you too.’ Ella took the lead as they headed towards the doorway of a detached house, which was in the most established part of a fairly new estate of family-sized homes. There was a low gradient ramp leading to the front door of the property and by the time Ella and the others had got there, Charlie and Kacey were already in the doorway, with little Jasper sitting on his father’s lap.

‘It’s always great to come and see you Charlie and not have to get the ramp out of my car.
