Chapter Nine

Jacob grimaced and propped his ankle up on the pillow Pa handed him. "Cecily said I only need to prop it up. She didn't say I had to stay in bed."

"Where do ya ‘spect to prop that foot up?" Pa raised an eyebrow.

"Can I at least go to the boarding house? If I stay locked up in this room, I'll go crazy, Pa."

Understanding dawned on Pa's face, along with a gleam in his eye. Jacob chose to ignore his father’s expression. Didn’t matter what the older man thought as long as it got Jacob out of the house.

Truth be told, the more time he spent alone, the more he missed his ma. And the more he thought about his ma and how much she’d like Christmas, the more time he wanted to spend with the beautiful woman.

“Uh, maybe going to the boarding house isn’t such a good idea.” Jacob raked a hand through his hair.

“Oh?” Pa crossed his arms. “Why not?”

“I don’t want to be a burden on Lanie and Sam.” Jacob snatched his gaze away from Pa’s knowing glance.

“You won’t be a burden.”

Jacob and Pa swung their heads to the door frame.

Christmas stood, a basket hanging over her arms. “Sorry for just walking in. The front door was open. Lanie actually sent me over with an invitation, as well as your supper, Edgar." She pointed to the basket.

"What's the invitation?" Jacob squirmed on his bed. He'd never had a woman aside from his ma in his room before. It thrilled and unnerved him at the same time to have Christmas be there.

"Lanie and Sam are inviting you both to stay at the boarding house. There was a family who was supposed to use the rooms, but they sent a telegram canceling. She wanted to make sure you stayed off your foot while Edgar’s at the butcher shop." Christmas gave his Pa a smile filled with love.

"I don't need to be watched or hovered over," Jacob growled. "I should be able to put some weight on my foot in a few days."

"You just said if you stayed in your room by yourself, you'd go crazy." Pa ran his hand over his mouth, the lines around his eyes revealing his hidden smile.

"To be honest, we're awfully bored over there. We can only clean so many times and there are only three meals to prepare, and that doesn’t take much work." Christmas shrugged. "It's not like we'd treat you like an invalid. A fresh face is always good to have around."

Jacob wiggled his eyebrows. "You think I'm fresh, do ya?"

Pink traveled up Christmas's neck and into her face. "Well, um, not like that, but well..."

Pa's lips became a straight line. "Why are you teasin' the gal?" He dropped his arm around her shoulders. "Don't listen to him, Christmas."

Kindness filled her eyes as she gazed at Pa. "Oh, I know he isn't being serious. But it's true. We could use a distraction." She turned hopeful eyes on Jacob. "So? Will you come?"

"I think it'll be more trouble than it's worth.
