OVERLEAF, RIGHT: Another view of Daddy’s office. It was above the Yates & Milton Pharmacy, which was owned by family friends. whites. These are crackers! ” A cracker, to our way of thinking, was a poor white person who had only his whiteness to hold above black folks—and they really used it to try to keep us down. That would change in the ’60s, not only in Atlanta, but also in many other places around the country. And by the 1970s, Atlanta would become one of the first big Southern cities to have a black mayor. Maynard Jackson, the son of old family friends, was elected mayor in 1973. In the 1920s up until the early ’60s, however, black city leadership at that level was just not something that was hoped for.
Our children went to segregated day schools and boarding schools. The teachers these schools employed were often excellent, though, so our children didn’t miss getting good educations. It isn’t as if a black teacher had options for employment. The schools for white students wouldn’t have them. Black professionals in education and children had so fewer options then as far as schools and extracurricular activities are concerned. When A. B. III was growing up, we wanted to put him in the Boy Scouts.
