Leather Apron was an early suspect named Pizer, who was arrested and then released. The letter rambles on in this semi-jocular tone, promising to ‘clip the lady’s ears off’ next time. It is signed ‘Jack the Ripper’. On the day after the double murder—a Sunday (when no newspapers came out), the man posted another letter to the Central News Agency, regretting that he had not time to get the ears. It will be remembered that the lobe of Catherine Eddowes’ right ear was cut off, so it is possible that the Ripper was trying to get the ears when he was interrupted by the footsteps of the policeman. On the other hand, these early letters signed ‘Jack the Ripper’ may well have been hoaxes. Although no details had been published, the whole of the East End knew about the double murder within a few hours.

C M MacLeod’s analysis of two of the Ripper letters strikes me as one of the most constructive pieces of evidence that I have seen. He feels that the letter accompanying the half of a kidney is almost certainly genuine, judging by the handwriting characteristics alone. The letter reads:

Mr Lusk

Sir

I send you half the kidne I took from one woman presarved it for you tother piece I fried and ate it was very nice I may send you the bloody knif that took it out if you only wate a whil longer signed

Catch me when you can Mister Lusk
