“That is some mean coyote you’re after, Christie.”

Wayne Christie had stepped out of the still-open back door of the now deceased Ray Kramer. The bedroom was a horror show, and he needed to get away for a moment. He even granted himself a cigarette. That was a risk since he was only three houses down from Martha. But what the hell did she matter anymore? That’s why he divorced the bitch, anyhow. Because he didn’t want her telling him what he could and could not do.

Wayne took a long drag and looked at the junior detective who had been working the Knox Hill teen killings with him. Detective Leonard. Bright kid. Probably a big future with the department. Smart fucking mouth, too.

“What makes you think they’re related?” Wayne asked.

Leonard grimaced. “Two murders within a week of each other, less than a quarter of a mile apart? You’re wanting me to believe it’s a coincidence.”

“Could be.”

“Not only a coincidence, but an animal that killed all three victims, the last of whom appeared to be sleeping soundly in his bed on the second floor of his home.”

“Like you said,” Wayne grunted, letting smoke plume out of his mouth, “that is one mean coyote we’re looking for.”

Detective Leonard chuckled. “Suppose this coyote just headbutted the old man to death, too, right? Just before turning his legs into mincemeat?”

Wayne felt a shiver dance from one shoulder to the other, and he wasn’t sure if it was his annoyance with his junior detective or if it was the scene upstairs. Probably both of them. Sure, he hated Ray Kramer, most people did. But he was never going to shake the image of Ray Kramer’s face, or lack thereof. It looked like the old man’s face had imploded. There was just a hole there. Like something pushed everything out, scooped it all out like his cranium was a carton of ice cream.

Guess you finally found a man strong enough to handle Kramer.

Leonard was still babbling about how wrong Wayne had been about the deaths near Knox Hill being the result of wild animal attacks. Couldn’t possibly be. And this guy, Kramer, no way some animal did that to his face. Wayne finally waved him off.

“Would you shut the fuck up for a second,” Wayne muttered, then took a second to clear his thoughts. “You know, Leonard. You’re a pretty damn good detective, but here’s something you might want to learn. You always start an investigation with a huge list of items and possibilities. Then you narrow it down. Everything starts out on the table until you clear it off. With the kids, there was no reason to rule out animal attack.”

“And the old man?”

“Clearly an animal didn’t do that to Kramer’s face.”

“So we take ‘animal’ off the table.”

Wayne shook his head. “Can we, though? What about the poor bastard’s legs?”

Leonard nodded. “Yeah. Pretty fucked up.”

“Teeth. It’s teeth, and you and I both know it.”

“Cannibal, maybe?”

Wayne rolled his eyes. “What do you think is more likely? That
