“My – my lord?” Sanemon asked. Kasami studied his face. He knew exactly what Shin was talking about, though clearly he wished he didn’t.

“Smuggling, Master Sanemon. Apparently, we have been playing host to smugglers. And for some time.”

“I told you,” Nao murmured. “He was bound to figure it out.”

Shin turned. “You knew?”

“Knew enough to pretend we didn’t,” Nao said, somewhat defensively. “Sanemon here assumed they were acting on your orders. I told him otherwise, but… well. You know how it is.”

“No. We do not,” Kasami said. “Tell us.”

Nao gave her a pouty look. “So humorless. I don’t know what Chika sees in you.”

Kasami blinked and flushed. “Chika? I…” The actress was a friend, of sorts. Kasami had spent some time teaching her the rudiments of swordplay – purely to help her with stage combat, of course.

Thankfully, Shin saved her from her embarrassment. “How often?” he asked, sharply. Sanemon swallowed and dabbed at his pate with a rag.

“A few times a month, at first. Then every few days. It’s stopped of late, however.”

“What was being brought in?”

Sanemon and Nao looked at one another. Sanemon made to reply, but Nao beat him to it. “We don’t know, my lord. We assumed you knew about it, so we kept quiet. And we didn’t poke our noses in where we weren’t invited.”

“We don’t even know where they were storing it!” Sanemon burst out. “I searched every inch of the theater, but – nothing. All I know is that the cistern cap was left off on moonless nights, and the stage crew reported hearing voices sometimes.”
