I hit up a second-hand store that bought wardrobe collections off studio backlots and picked up the cheapest, ugliest cocktail dress I could find in my size. I had a lot to choose from, and settled on an asymmetrical black one-shoulder number with a vomit-spatter of sequins. It cost more than I would ever spend on a dress, but that was the cost of looking the part. And if we couldn’t get the money up front, there would always be a watch to snatch.

I met Noah at his hotel room. I had roommates, we couldn’t meet there, and he could expense account some room service. He walked me through the plan. It felt as though no time had passed at all. The only difference was that the hotel rooms were nicer.

And when he kissed me, I let him.
