He needed a few things. He passed through the dark tavern where the barmaid was asleep on the counter, and went up the stairs to his room. He was staying on the second floor, with a window facing toward the street. He peered out through the foggy glass and couldn’t see anyone. Then he pulled the curtains shut. He didn’t need any witnesses.

He traveled lightly, all except for a formidable chest that he kept locked at all times. In this trunk were all his secrets, and he wasn’t about to let some common thief expose his ways to the crowd.

He was a charlatan. He had never really ridden a town of any pests or plagues. But there was good money in pretending, and above all the Pied Piper considered himself a type of actor. In his chest were his various costumes and props, some used only once, and some used repeatedly from town to town. He even had an assortment of items pertaining to witchcraft: tarot cards, black candles, and even a pirate’s flag. He dug through the pile until he found what he was looking for: a genuine silver sword. He stood, and swiped it through the air for practice.

It was a real sword. If you’re going to be a fake person, you needed real props. And this seemed like something that would scare the children of the town.

After all, he didn’t really believe the town’s children were walking the streets as the living dead. He wasn’t a fool. But if pretending to fight the dead was what it took to earn his paycheck, he would play along.

He fit a belt around his waist, and slid the sword into the scabbard.
