I’ve gotten so used to Holden’s daily deliveries that when he drives up the day before the next home game of the season, I think nothing of it. If anything, I’m wondering what bizarre and hilarious gift she’ll have thought to pack this time. I’m running low on Flamin’ Hots, but now that I’ve figured out a routine for grocery shopping, I’m less reliant on her for my nutritional needs.

In fact, I’m falling into a rhythm in Sorrowville, and even I am forced to admit that this place isn’t that bad. Of course, I could never admit that to my father. He can never know that I’m getting comfortable here. And the house is still not even close to being a showplace.

But. I don’t hate it anymore. At least, not with the vitriol that I used to.

So, instead of rushing to the front door when I hear his car door close, desperate for any connection to the outside world, I shout through the screen door, “Do you need a signature this time?”

“Yeah,” Holden calls back. “Special delivery. It needs supervision.”

He sounds like he’s on the verge of laughing, which may or may not mean that there’s a dragon dong falling out of this package. Except, I’m already the proud owner of a whole bunch of those, so knowing Britt, she’s upped her game with something even weirder and more scandalous. Butt plugs? Bondage gear?

Except that when I make it to the door, Holden is only holding a small mailing envelope, and he isn’t alone.

“Tierney!” a high-pitched voice squeals, and a woman-sized blur yanks the screen door wide and launches herself into my arms.

“Britt?” I squeeze her. “What are you doing here?”

“Mini vacation!” she squeals. “I had to see this place for myself!”

“But… how?”

Behind her, Holden scratches his nose as he shoves the mailing envelope into my hands. Since Britt is here, I’m not sure who it’s from or how they got ahold of this temporary address. “I’m technically the town ride share, too. Only, most people have their own cars. She called the office, and Pru told me to get her. Is she, um? The one?”

“The one who sent me a literal crate of dragon dongs?” I deadpan.

Britt, shameless as ever, pulls away. “Not just dragons! There was the rabbit, and that one that looked like a tentacle, and the sparkly unicorn schlong…”

Holden stumbles backward and books it for his vehicle, his face brighter red than Rudolph’s nose. I may or may not have heard him mutter ‘city girls’ before he turned around.

I give Britt a little squeeze before pulling away to glower at her. “Seriously, you’re mighty brave, showing your face after that last package. I think we broke him.”

She flutters her eyelashes innocently. “What? I wanted you to have options. Besides, it wasn’t my fault it opened up during transit.”

“Between showing my face around town or running away? I have to work with these people, Britt.”

She grabs the handle of her suitcase and shuffles past me without waiting for an invitation.
