AFTERWORD
Ted Hughes died of a heart attack on October 28, 1998. For the previous year and a half, heâd been receiving treatment for bowel cancer, an illness heâd kept hidden from those around him. On May 13, 1999, Hughes, who in 1984 had been appointed poet laureate of the United Kingdom, was commemorated at Westminster Abbey in London. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles were in attendance. In his speech, friend and poet Seamus Heaney said that no death outside his own family had left him as bereft as the death of his friend Ted Hughes, and he went on to describe him as a fortress of tenderheartedness and strength. Frieda Hughes is a poet and painter. She emigrated to Australia but returned to the United Kingdom when her father became ill. Nicholas Farrar Hughes committed suicide at his home in Alaska on March 16, 2009.
