CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Another evening and another note from Sean announcing his absence from the house. For once, I didn't mind. Though a maverick and cavalier in his attitude to the law, even Sean might object to my evening's plan of action. Had he been at home, he might have asked awkward questions, which I might have felt obliged to answer, him being the boss. This way, I could sneak out as soon as dusk fell and make my way back to Cheltenham. But as I was about to pen my reply, I found a further message on the reverse.

BTW - you could be more sympathetic, Sass. Adam is more than just a case. He's a family friend. Keep your negative thoughts to yourself.

I almost reeled at the unfairness of it. I had bitten my tongue until it hurt, trying not to state the obvious fact that Adam was either imprisoned or dead. Sean must be more upset than I'd realised to take it out on me as if I wasn't drowning in my own problems too. I should probably have let sleeping dogs lie, but I scribbled an angry response.

I get it, Sean; I really do. But you need a reality check. And please don't leave passive-aggressive notes. Living here is hard enough right now. Sass.

Bored with healthy food options, I made a Welsh rarebit mix and slathered it over three sourdough crumpets, following it up with a bag of Skittles. Then I lay on the couch, communing with the lizards for a moment before checking my emails. My stomach churned as I recognised my relative Callum's email address. Seconds passed as my fingers hovered over the phone, reluctant to read his message in case he had changed his mind or couldn't make our meeting. Misery had circled my emotions like a predatory beast since my earlier therapy session and was preparing to pounce. I readied myself to meet the potential bad news head-on.

Hello cousin!

Just checking to see if you're still okay for Friday. Five thirty is looking too hopeful now. Can we make it six?
