‘Charlotte, please talk to me.’

She is still huddled on the bed.

‘Charlotte!’ I speak more gruffly now, as if I were speaking to an ill-behaved mongrel.

She sits up. Her eyes are red. My poor love.

I crouch down next to her. It pains me to see her so unhappy.

‘I have to go away for the rest of the day, but please don’t worry. You will be perfectly safe. I can see you on my phone via an app. It links into these cameras. I will check on you regularly. I have brought you a plate of freshly made sandwiches and some fruit, which you can have for supper. There are also some biscuits and a yoghurt, so hopefully you won’t go hungry. There are two thermos flasks. One filled with tea, the other with iced water.’ I point to the paper plates and plastic cutlery. I doubt she can do much damage with those. ‘Oh, and I nearly forgot. There is a bar of fine dark chocolate should you want a little pick-me-up. I’ll be back very late, so please don’t wait up for me.’

Charlotte lets out an unpleasant harrumph.

‘May I suggest you use the time wisely. Why don’t you carry on with the portrait? I know the lighting isn’t so good in here, but hopefully it will be adequate. I have lots of ideas for your painting career and can’t wait to support you in your exciting artistic journey. We can talk about it when I’m back.’

She turns her head away from me. I stand up. Beautiful Charlotte is trying my patience, and it’s vital I leave before I lose any control.

I wish I could take her into my arms and kiss her goodbye, but now is not the time. Instead, I stand up, nod at her and leave the room, carefully bolting it behind me.
