Chapter Twelve

They drove back to Pond’s Lodge, and all afternoon Steve worked on outside projects that Jan gave him. He’d started thinking about his pursuers again, but since he’d done everything he could do he decided to spend the rest of the day thinking of pleasant things. Like Lara. Lara’s apology. Her honesty and continued love. Their possible future.

He understood so much more now. Everything, maybe. Although he agreed that some of her thought processes in college had been juvenile and mistaken, he understood—and he forgave. Even better, Lara had never stopped thinking about him in return. She had never stopped loving him. He wanted to hold her until every molecule of pain drifted into outer space or floated away to the ether. He wanted to erase all the hurtful old memories and exchange them for a lifetime of extraordinary experiences neither one of them would ever want to forget. They could really have a life together.

Of course, first he had to get the law off his back. And he had to find their stash.

His pursuers were cops, but they were corrupt California cops, so they shouldn’t be able to find him here. Not easily. There were many people living under the radar in these mountains, so his step was light for the moment, his mind and eyes open to the beauty surrounding him. He had a bit of time yet, and so he gazed in wonder at majestic Sawtelle Peak. Maybe he could drive to the top with Lara to see the high alpine wildflowers.

Or, would it be dangerous to be seen anywhere in public with a particular person?

She had invited him to her place for dinner tonight. He felt safe enough to see her there and tell her of his plans. Maybe she could even help. She knew the area and most of its people. Maybe she’d think up something he hadn’t. Maybe she’d have a clever plan. With the way he felt right now, he’d have to remind himself to be vigilant.

He spent the end of the afternoon practicing on the small stage in the Pond’s Lodge bar. This time he worked up songs he hadn’t sung in years, song with romantic lyrics and full of promise.

“I love hearing you sing happy songs for a change,” Jan said as Steve strummed his own version of Billy Joel’s “She’s Got a Way” on his guitar. “You sure seem different this afternoon. Did you and Lara have a good, long…lunch?”

Steve couldn’t help but grin. Then, with stronger strums, he answered her question with a rousing rendition of James Brown’s “I Feel Good.”

Jan danced out of the bar to wait on someone in the store.

* * *

Lara heard the knock at exactly nine p.m. She opened the door, all smiles, and there stood Steve, shrouded in the darkness of the recessed porch.

“Where’s your alcove light?” he asked, frowning up into the rafters.

Confused and slightly disappointed, Lara glanced around. This wasn’t the warm and welcoming response she’d been hoping for and expecting.
