Chapter Thirty-Five

Yeshua sat in Capernaum, on the broken steps of the White Synagogue. The sun was beginning to set; the sky was turning pink.

The crowds had flooded the ruins of the village earlier that day. He had started to heal them, and word had spread. The tourists had watched, believing it was a show, but the local Jews and Arabs had known differently. The seriously ill from the surrounding villages and Tiberias had come to him, in cars or boats.

Yehuda had convinced the National Park guardians to give Yeshua a key, arguing that he was drawing more crowds for their profit, and they had given him free access.

Now the park was closed, and the crowds had left.

Yeshua examined the faces of his friends and family. Miri was sitting close to him, holding his prayer shawl, her eyes filling with tears of memory. He reached out to touch her face. John was sitting on her other side, attentive, while his brother James smiled at Yeshua, nodding his kippah towards him. Peter and Arye were standing a little further away near the church, viewing the Roman ruins. The others were further away again, wandering around the village in the dimming light.

Yehuda walked towards him. “The gate is locked,” he said, extending out his hand with the key lying on top.

“Thank you,” said Yeshua, taking the key as Yehuda sat down heavily on the step next to him, nodding, staring forward into the twilight.

“What is it?” murmured Yeshua. Yehuda’s body was tense, his brow creased into a frown. He closed his eyes.

“I feel sick,” he whispered.

Yeshua reached to grasp his arm. “Sick?” he asked, but Yehuda reached to move Yeshua’s hand away from his arm.

“No,” he said. “Save it for someone who really needs it.”

Yet his body had been rigid under Yeshua’s hand.

“Peace,” murmured Yeshua, leaning towards him. “Shalom.”

Yehuda looked away, towards Peter, and then back to Yeshua.

“Can I speak with you in private?” he asked, and Yeshua rose to his feet and led Yehuda away from the synagogue.

Yehuda began to pace in front of the Roman ruins.

“I’ve done some things,” he said, glancing up at Yeshua and then away. “Things I shouldn’t have done.”

“Tell me,” said Yeshua. “Let me relieve you.”

“I…” He choked and made himself continue. “I stole,” he whispered. “I stole, and covered it up, and…”

“Can you put it back?” asked Yeshua.

“No,” said Yehuda. “I destabilised it all. The backup when the economy fails: ‘Good as gold.’” He pulled out a gold coin and laid it at Yeshua’s feet.

“They know,” he said. “Somehow, they found out.”

“Who?” asked Yeshua, searching him, but the way was blocked.

“I can’t say,” said Yehuda. “One of them is a terrorist, and…and the other one is even worse.”

Tears filled his eyes. “You shouldn’t have asked me to join you,” he said. “I shouldn’t have come.”

Yeshua frowned. “You are handling our interests well.”

“No,” said Yehuda. “I should stay away. But they will know if I’m staying away.”

Fear was consuming him.

“They are threatening you,” muttered Yeshua, and Yehuda laughed.
