Chapter 14

Ian

Tomorrow, our days off matched up, and I wanted to make it special for Grayson. He’d been working really hard and he needed some rest. Either my idea was brilliant or awful. I wasn’t sure exactly which.

I grabbed the two bags I just finished packing and brought them out to the car. My phone buzzed with the half-hour warning alarm I’d set. There was still quite a bit to do before he got home, including showering. I ran inside and turned on the shower, letting it get warm while I brushed my teeth and rid myself of my clothing.

The inn I found for my surprise getaway was about an hour from here. We wouldn’t have time to dilly-dally once he got home if we wanted to be there for our dinner reservations. The Bear’s Den Inn was one of those niche places where they had the wait staff dress up in period-ish clothing. Tonight’s special had won me over. It was Grayson’s favorite meal, Beef Wellington. He was going to love it.

The part I was unsure about was if he’d be happy jumping straight into a surprise overnight date after the busy week he’d had. If he hesitated at all, I’d cancel. This entire thing had been organized to make his life better, and if it added stress to him—it was done.

I’d booked us their “Garden” room, which wasn’t actually near a garden. From what I could tell by the listing, it was so named because of the very bold floral wallpaper that donned its walls. It had a huge soaking tub, and I figured that would make up for the visual overload.

I managed to be showered and dressed a few minutes before my mate walked through the door. He dropped his satchel and walked straight into my arms, sinking into me and sighing.

“I could sleep for a week.” He tilted his head up and nipped on my lower jaw. “Or something else in bed… I’m sure a bed is in the cards.”

“I could be persuaded to stay in.” I pressed a kiss to his neck.

“Were you planning…” He pushed back enough to see me. “You’re going out.”

“I was thinking we would, but staying home is fine too.”

“Nope. I could use some fun. Give me five minutes to shower?”

“I’ll give you ten.”

He was out in nine, his hair still damp, his clothing matching the same business casual I was wearing. He looked good enough to eat.

“Ready?” He playfully smacked my ass.

“So very.”

We walked out hand in hand, and as we reached the car, I popped the trunk. “I packed these thinking maybe I could take you to a fancy dinner and then woo you into staying at the inn for the night?”

“You planned all of this… for me?” He blinked up at me.

“Of course I did. I love you.” I shut the trunk. “So what do you think? Are you up for an adventure?”

We got in, and I drove us to dinner. On the car ride there, Grayson decompressed from his day, telling me all about it.
