Virginia turned the lock gingerly. Turned the knob slowly, opening the door into her dark house. She flipped on the light switch by the doorway. Blinked until her eyes had adjusted. Then she waited. Looked. Listened.

She told herself it was silly to be so cautious. Roger would have called again if Lloyd was out of custody. But the caution felt built in. No longer optional. Lloyd had reduced her home to a land of possible enemies, a place where she did not dare let her guard down.

She resented him deeply for that.

Just for a split second she imagined T-Rex running to the door to greet her. Then she remembered.

She resented Jody Schilling deeply for that.

It was one thing to lose your fiancé. That was bad. It was another bad thing to lose your dog. But both at right around the same time?

She thought about Jody losing his grandfather. It was sad. Very sad. But so was the situation over here, at her house. And somehow he had won. Somehow he was coming home to a happy, loving dog. And she was the one stuck with silent and empty. With utterly alone.

She marched to the phone and picked it up. Dialed the diner by heart. She was going to tell Fern she’d be late. That she was sorry for the extra workload, but that Fern would just have to start serving breakfast without her. Because she was going to drive up to the lake and get her dog.

She heard one ring on the line.

She hung up the phone.

Because she realized if she drove out and got T-Rex, she’d have to bring him back home and leave him alone all day while she worked. He’d always been good about staying alone. But now it didn’t seem fair. Because now, if she just left him where he was with Jody for the time being, he’d have someone with him every minute of the day.

Also, she hadn’t changed the locks yet. And Lloyd might manage to get himself bailed out today.

But really, even if Lloyd had been fully removed from the picture—which she hoped he would be soon—it still felt wrong to leave T-Rex alone all day just a minute after bringing him back home.

She changed her clothes quickly and got herself to the diner instead.
