On a street named Beacon, atop Billy Goat Hill...

Lounging on the pillow-covered dais, Selena heard someone opening the heavy wooden door above.

"Who is it," she called.

"Gregori," called a voice. "I bring a gift."

Selena sat up, watching as the little vampire hopped down the steps, dragging a bound captive behind him. The man was dressed in ragged clothing. Large-nosed, his pockmarked face was scarred by fresh burns. Barely conscious, him head banged on the stone steps as Gregori dragged him downstairs by his feet.

"I caught him lurking around Angel's house," Gregori explained.

Gregori had been sent to spy on Sullivan's activities.

"He was hiding in the bushes across the street. He didn't see me coming," Gregori snickered, his snake tongue flickering in and out of his mouth.

"Who is he?" Selena said, getting to her feet and walking over to examine the captive. There was a rumor going round that one of the Primogen had for some reason lured a vampire-hunter to the city.

"All is well . . ." mumbled the man on the floor, his head rolling back and forth. "Have faith in the all- knowing father.. ."

He was delirious, but his words sounded somehow familiar to Selena.

"I wonder..." she mused. "Take him to the rear chamber, Gregori. We'll make him talk." She turned and strode from the room, heading for a special chamber kept out of sight. "We'll find out who he is and maybe, after some persuasion, find a way to turn him to our own uses."

Gregori followed behind Selena, dragging the poor captive roughly over the stone floor.

"Of course," he said.
