Chapter 15 ~ Levi

I felt as if I were watching a silent movie as I followed Alice through the house. The only sounds were the swishing of the Tyvek suits we wore and random noises that filtered in from outside. Alice paused on and off, studying things, and I hung back.

I wanted to be there for her, but I didn’t want to intrude on her thoughts or feelings. The expressions on her face changed as her eyes shifted around a room. When she looked at the baseball glove, she clenched her jaw, but when she looked at the books on her shelves, she smiled. The plastic containers in the closet put lines on her forehead as she probably wondered what mysteries lay within them, and the bathroom brought about a tension that I hadn’t seen on her face before.

It was in her mother’s bedroom that her expression really began to speak volumes, and I wasn’t sure I was prepared for the conversation, so I was extremely glad that she’d given me a task to perform.

I took my time. I could have carried out two buckets at a time, but instead, I carried one container on each trip. After my fourth trip, I went out to my garage and retrieved a pop-up canopy to put over the back porch. That way when Alice came out to go through things, she wouldn’t be doing it in the sun. I also grabbed a big container of antiseptic wipes and wiped down the four tubs I had brought out. Now, Alice wouldn’t even have to wear gloves as she went through them.

Each time I went back inside, I paused outside of her mother’s room and checked on her. For a while, I’d find her standing in different areas of the room, doing nothing more than looking, but then on my fifth trip back she began to go through a drawer. I didn’t bother her. She knew I was there and if she needed something, she knew where to find me.

There were twenty-three assorted colored and sized plastic storage containers between the two small closets. Ten were from Aaron’s room and thirteen from Alice’s room. All of them were the good kind that had a solid seal on them that protected the contents from moisture and bugs, so I knew that whatever was inside was safe from bacteria. Alice could go through these items and do as she wished without worry.

I was tempted to lift one of the lids to see what was inside, but I decided that it wasn’t my place. It was one thing to clean out a fridge, or clear out the cupboards, quite another to go through packed boxes.

A car caught my attention as it pulled into the driveway, and I set down the last container on the porch. I’d kept the two piles separated because I had a feeling they were meant to be that way. They had all been numbered so they were meant to be looked at in a specific order.
