In Reeves’ book Dancing In The Street, she held back from any major league dissing of any of her Motown colleagues, even Berry Gordy. She isn’t sorry, she says.

—Martha Reeves—

I love the book. I’m glad I’ve refrained from being angry, and I didn’t gossip, and I didn’t put anything in my book that would hurt anybody. I’m glad I did that. It didn’t sell like it should have sold because I didn’t put anything dirty or rotten in there, but then, I wasn’t trying to sell books, I was trying to clean myself of all the information I had, to set the record straight.

A lot of people have written books with a lot of lies in it. So if they want to believe anybody, maybe they’ll come to the source.

We used to sit down and talk: Mary Wells, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Florence Ballard. We always said that we’d write this down, because nobody would believe the things that we went through, as kids, on that bus, trying to become famous. And they didn’t get a chance.

So I said before something happens that I can’t control, I’d better get this book out of me. Now I got the second book, and I think I know how to write it. Oh yes. I started it and it’ll take maybe a year. Last time I rushed, I gathered things in a hurry. This time I’ll take my time, work on my own with a word processor, and get it to the point where once it’s edited, the truth will stay in.
