Sunday morning, I woke up with a terrible headache. I hadnât drunk all that much, maybe just three glasses, but it was enough to bring on a nagging hangover. My head felt like a million elephants were currently stampeding through the jungle.
I moved as slow as a turtle, turning my head over to check the other side of the bed. Christian had already left for work, over two hours ago, judging by the time.
I slowly dragged myself out of bed and moseyed into the bathroom. I turned on the shower, stripped myself of last nightâs ridiculous gear, and hopped into the shower.
I quickly dressed in black yoga pants and a blue t-shirt, pulled my hair into a tight ponytail, and threw some socks and my Adidas on my feet.
I was meeting Mom alone for Sunday morning brunch, around eleven at our usual spot. The Greek diner in town made the best food around. It was always our go-to spot.
I decided to walk since our meeting place was just a few blocks from my apartment, and it was a gorgeous spring day outside. It wasnât chilly at all, so I just threw on a light sweater over my t-shirt.
âHow was last night? Did you, Samantha, and Cathy have a good time?â Mom asked over her plate of toast and scrambled eggs.
She knew we had planned to go out the night before and was shocked I even made it out of bed. I was currently swirling a spoon around in my cup of coffee. The caffeine would definitely help my aching head.
âOh, yeah. It was great.â
âHave you finished labeling the placards for the seating arrangements?â Mom asked.
âNo, Cathy actually took it home with her a few nights ago. Sheâs going to finish that up for me. Her calligraphy is better than mine,â I answered.
Mom took a bite of her buttered toast and then shoveled some eggs into her mouth. She took a sip of her orange juice and smiled at me. I knew she was so excited about this wedding, probably more so than me.
âWhat about the favors? Did you finish wrapping those up?â
âYes, Sam came over a couple of nights ago after work, and helped Chris and I finish up,â I replied, draining my cup of coffee.
I was already missing the bitter, warm liquid that soothed my insides. I located our waiter and nodded toward him, letting him know I was ready for another cup. He swiftly scurried over, automatically refilling it. Thank goodness for caffeine.
âAnything else I can get for you ladies?â he asked.
âIâm okay. You want anything else, sweetheart?â Mom asked me.
âNo, thanks. Iâm all good,â I said, looking up at our server.
When he was gone, Mom looked at me and asked, âHowâs Christian holding up with all this wedding stuff?â
I stirred in some sugar and took a sip of my second cup, satisfying my need for the drug.
âHeâs been really good, helping out here and there when he can. Heâs awesome.â
âHe really is. Donât you ever forget that.â
I looked at Mom questioningly, not sure what she was referring to.
