“Put it on.”

“No.”

“Come on. You’ve got to put this on before you stick it in.”

Lennox batted Otto’s hands away and knocked the jockstrap and the protective cup to the damp tiles of the boys’ locker room.

“Fuck no. I’m not trying out or playing or anything else. I don’t fuck around with sports.”

“But lacrosse is—”

“A sport.”

Lennox adjusted his backpack on his shoulder and lay back on the bench between the rows of lockers. Otto was staying after school for lacrosse. Will had baseball out on the field today. January had started with ice, then offered a steamy week of chilly showers and bright sun, and now, a few days before Lucy’s departure, the temperature was in the seventies with a strong wind swirling up what remained of the dead leaves.

“Fine, piss-baby. I’ll go try out by myself.”

“I thought you were already on the team.”

“I am. Football, basketball, and lacrosse. But we do new tryouts every year just to make sure we’ve got the best team.”

Lennox sat up as Otto finished dressing in his uniform—he assumed it was for lacrosse, though he’d never seen the game played—and laughed. Half of Otto’s belly was visible, and his shorts were like very loose boxer-briefs.

“Might want to wear something else. Unless you’re aiming for a booty call. Mmm, look at that round ass.”

He tried to swat Otto’s backside and earned himself a punch to the shoulder.

“Don’t let Will hear you worshipping my—”

“You clearly don’t know the way Lennox worships an ass, if that’s your idea of it.”

Will turned the row of lockers and fastened the belt on his baseball pants. Lennox eyed them appreciatively and reached over for Will’s ass instead. His boyfriend leaned into the touch and wiggled his eyebrows at Otto as Lennox squeezed.

Otto made a face and looked in his locker for a different shirt. “You two are such perverts.”

“Beats masturbation.”

“We beat each other instead. Boner fights, Otto, man, you should give those a try sometime.”

“Yuck. I’m out.” Otto headed for the locker room door.

“Don’t sound very out to me!”

Otto left. Will chuckled and sat on the bench beside Lennox.

“You going to come watch practice or stay in here?”

Lennox shrugged. “Might hit the band room. Or work on that essay. It’s due Friday.”

“You’re really going to apply?”

“I’m going to try.”

What Lennox didn’t say was that he was doing it for Will. Maybe a little for himself—Berklee seemed like a great next phase of life, from the state-of-the-art music rooms to the people his age who shared his passion—but mostly for Will. College was Will’s realm, for both of them now, and the least Lennox could do was give it a try.

“Osborne, get a move on!”

“Gotta go. Don’t forget to invite Otto tonight!”

Will kissed his cheek and hurried out with his bag of gear. Lucy’s going away party was planned for tonight: a small dinner at Will’s house. Ben and Karen would go out to dinner and a movie for the night and the house, even on a weeknight, was theirs. So far only Lucy, Kelly, and the two of them would be there.
