After Eve served everyone Grandma’s namesake drink, she closed the bar. She told Carly that she didn’t want to be responsible for getting her family drunk on Christmas Eve. When everything was put away, Carly was left in the kitchen with her mom.

She looked into the living room and could hear her grandmother telling Eve stories of Holly. Her dad had looked up the price of homes and land in the area and suggested if Eve didn’t hold any sentimental value to the property then she could sell it for a handsome profit. Carly smiled when her dad told Eve to get every last penny out of it in honor of her mom and what it had cost her.

“You really like her, don’t you?” Kim said while she loaded the glasses into the dishwasher.

Carly faced her mom and smiled. “I really do.”

“You haven’t known her very long.”

“Nope, but we’ve spent enough time together that I know a lot about her life.”

“Be careful, honey. Don’t let your sadness and desire to comfort Eve because of what she’s going through fool you into thinking it’s love. I’ve seen the way you two look at each other and I know Eve needs you as a friend.”

“What if I want to be more than her friend?”

Kim smiled. “Eve is vulnerable. She’s lost her mother and from what she’s told us they were everything to one another. You don’t want her to depend on you like she did her mother. You want her to love you like a partner.”

“She doesn’t depend on me,” Carly said.

“Yes she does. You’re the one she looks to when she’s overwhelmed. You’re the one she looks to when she’s unsure.”

“Of course she does, Mom. She doesn’t know y’all. She looks to me because she knows me.”

“Does she?”

Carly raised her brows. “Does she know who I am?”

Kim nodded. “Have you even talked to her about who you are or did you only listen to her life story while you drove here?”

Carly considered her mom’s words. “It’s true we have talked a lot about Eve, but that’s because this whole trip centers on her mom’s last wishes. She asked me about my family and while we were gathered around the table I could tell she was taking it all in. She fits right in with us. You do like her, don't you, Mom?”

“I like her, honey. I just don’t want you to get hurt when this is over and you’re back in New York. You won’t be spending all this time together and she’ll be starting a new life in a way, without her mother.”

Carly furrowed her brow. She sort of understood what her mother was getting at, but honestly she would be glad when this was over. Then she and Eve could spend time together without this hanging over their heads. It would be nice to talk about their mundane days and go on an actual date.

“Thanks, Mom. I’ll be okay. Your friend Angela raised an amazing daughter just as you did.
