The heavy scent of wolf hit me as soon as I stepped into the foyer, putting me on edge as a middle-aged woman greeted us at the door.
âWell, Iâll be. Itâs really you,â the woman said as she took Fay in her arms. âI thought I was hallucinating when I saw you pull up the drive. Did you try calling here earlier? The phones have been on the fritz all day because of the snow.â
âI had a feeling the lines were down when I couldnât get through,â Fay said once they drew apart.
âAnd who is this?â Fayâs mother asked as she offered me the same treatment sheâd given her daughter.
My body tensed as the woman took me in her arms, but any panic I mightâve had was lost under the sweet scent of cinnamon and sugar wafting in from the kitchen.
âNot much of a hugger, I see. Fay isnât, either, though you already knew that, didnât you?â
âMom!â Fayâs voice went up an octave.
âWhat? Iâm allowed to make small talk with our guests.â
âSmalltalk, Mom. You know, like the weather?â
âOh yes, just look at all that snow.â Her mother rolled her eyes at that. âYouâll have to forgive my daughter. The way she carries on, youâd think I was planning to have our guests for dinner.â Then, with a soft chuckle, she added, âThough I suppose, in some way, I am.â
âOh my god, Mom. Really?â
âWhat? You and your father arenât the only ones who get to have a sense of humor around here. Iâll have you know I can be just as dark as the rest of them.â Then, leaning in close so only I could hear, she said, âIâm really just a sheep in wolfâs clothing. I couldnât hurt a fly.â
âMostly because they outwit you.â Fay hid her smile behind a hand, then ducked out of the way when her mother batted in her direction.
âI can see where Fay gets her charm,â I said with a laugh. âIâm Alana. Itâs so nice to finally meet you, Mrsââ
âCute and courteous?â her mother said. âFay shouldâve brought you around a lot sooner. Oh, and none of that mrs. nonsense. You can call me June. Dinner will be ready in half an hour, so if either of you are hungryâ¦â June made a motion with her hand, then headed toward the kitchen at the back of the house.
âShe seems nice,â I said as I watched the other woman go.
âShe can be,â Fay said as we sat down on the sofa in front of the living room window. âBut give her some time. Once she warms up to you, Iâm sure thatâll change.â
âOh.â
âBut it isnât because of you,â Fay said as she turned to face me. âThatâs just how she is. Moms, you know?â
âI think itâs a rule,â I said while studying the mezzanine at the top of the stairs to our right. âTheyâre kind of like our first bullies, you know? Their harsh lessons help us prepare.â
âFor what? War?â
I shrugged, then averted my gaze. âFor anything, I suppose.
