Chapter 14

• ---------------------------- •

Griffin sat behind his desk at the station. It might be Saturday night but he that feeling. That sense that he was so close to the answer he needed he just had to look over everything again.

He had been at home drinking a beer on the porch and watching the sun set over the snowy landscape, when he got the feeling.

He headed straight to the small station building and was now going over all the information he had gathered in the last week. Cattle rustlers either worked in small groups of men, usually ranch hands, or they were part of a syndicate. There were even a few cases where they had stolen cattle only to flood the market and lower ranch prices so corporate empires could buy them out at a rock bottom price.

As to who had taken Stacy’s cattle, he still didn’t have an answer. But he had enough contacts keeping an eye out. If a hundred head of cattle showed up anywhere he would be the first to know, unless they were slaughtered by a backyard butcher and sold as cuts of beef. He sighed, leaning back in his chair; he hoped to God that wasn’t the case because he had no chance of catching the culprits then.

When the office phone rang he ignored it, knowing it was directed to his cell phone. He picked up his cell phone ready to answer when the first ring sounded. “Sheriff Bailey.”

“You better get your ass down to the Irish Rover, Sheriff. That sister of mine has lost all her damn marbles.” Steven paused for breath and coughed before he continued. “She’s gone and set a trap for those rustlers and is out there right now hoping to catch them herself.”

“Shit!” Griffin didn’t have another word to describe what Steven had just told him. “Why didn’t you go with her?”

“She wouldn’t let me, granted I’m down with flu. When I told her to phone you she said you were busy. Too busy with what exactly?” Steven all but shouted into the phone before another bout of coughing robbed him of his breath.

“She didn’t call me,” Griffin said through clenched teeth. It was one thing telling him about setting a trap; it was another trying it on her own. “I’m on my way.”

Griffin ended the call and grabbed his keys even as he reached for the light. He high-tailed it out of town praying that he’d reach the Irish Rover before the rustlers did.

Thirty minutes later he turned into the ranch. He headed straight for the main house to get the rest of the story from Steven.

As soon as he saw Steven he knew why he didn’t join his sister. He looked like hell. Once he had directions to the paddock where Stacy was setting up camp he headed in that direction. He didn’t know the road and had to switch on his lights to navigate the bumps and fences. When he turned into the north paddock he caught sight of a few trees and brush to the right.
