‘What do you think? Will it do?’ Gracie asked anxiously. ‘I’ve never decorated a church before.’

‘It’ll do just fine. It looks great, darling.’ All Souls’ font was filled with cherry blossom; on the altar stood shining copper vases of white narcissi, their scent heady. ‘Daisy’ll be real pleased. But when will it be our turn, Gracie? Wouldn’t a summer wedding be wonderful? This summer, I mean.’

‘Hey! There’s Drew and Kitty first!’ Gracie pulled shut the heavy oak door, blinking in the bright sunshine.

‘We don’t have to wait for them. We could have a quiet affair, if that’s what you wanted.’

‘Then what about your parents? They’ll be missing Kitty’s wedding. Is it right they should miss yours too?’

‘We could have our wedding over again, in Kentucky – you could have all the trimmings; a white dress, the lot. Mom would like that!’

They had come to the place where the bomber crashed, grown over with grass and wild flowers now; a green space where once the village hall stood.

Gracie looked away, because this morning it made her think of her vow never to marry in wartime yet here she was with Bas’s ring on her finger and him trying to persuade her down the aisle!

‘Yes – we-e-ll. We haven’t talked over much about things yet. You know what I mean – that side of things.’

She looked at her shoes as they walked, because she knew her cheeks were blazing and because thoughts of sharing a ed with Bas had taken up far too much of her time lately.

‘Then hadn’t we better? Right here and now?’ They had turned off the village street and were walking along the lane that led to Rowangarth stableyard and the bothy and Keeper’s Cottage. ‘Couldn’t agree more; that side of things has got to be talked about. I want kids, and I hope you want them too.’

‘I want your children, Bas, but I think I’d rather wait till the war is over.’

‘Good! That’s one thing settled! And would it be so terrible for us to get married fairly soon? Keth and Daisy are doing it, and Kitty’s wedding dress has arrived. By the way, how much of a family would you like?’

They were leaning elbows on the gate, now, gazing across Home Farm cow pasture.

‘At least two, Bas, if we can afford them.’

‘We can. The money side of it won’t be a problem.’

‘And you won’t ever think I’m marrying you for your money, because I’m not. Will I tell you something?’

She moved closer so their shoulders and thighs touched and the lovely, familiar wanting feeling started on the tip of her tongue, then shivered right through her.

‘The day Lady Helen died, she’d been telling me about the night she met Sir John. They must have been so in love, and I remember hoping that one day I would fall in love with someone like him; tall and fair with grey eyes. Yet here you are, Bas Sutton, not a bit like him and I love you very much.
