Gable’s words also rang inside me, like a bell someone had struck and kept bashing over and over. I reached to take his hand, to offer comfort, but he pulled away, putting a thumb on his chin and a forefinger over his upper lip.

He paused to look me up and down. “If I’m really honest, I’m surprised he doesn’t feel the same way about you. Then again, maybe I’m not so surprised at that.” He let the implications set in for a moment.

But I did not care for what he implied. “Meaning what?”

Gable’s eyes narrowed. “I’m a bloke.”

I resented that assertion. “So my being a woman makes a difference to him, is that what you’re saying?”

“What do you think?” Gable’s sharp look pierced me. Something about his jagged edges told me he wasn’t a man to be messed with.

I highly doubted that was the reason. While I hated to admit it, my family connections, my abilities, and the fact that Camus wanted them, were the only reason the Guild had accepted me. Still, I considered Gable’s theory in light of what we’d shared earlier against the breach, and the things that had happened between Blaze and me in the Terra Room. I found myself without an easy comeback. All that I could say was, “And you obviously don’t have any better opinion of him than he has of you.”

Gable fell back on his cocky façade, probably as a protective mechanism. “Blaze is full of his own power. And in my opinion, it makes him more confident than he ought to be. Makes him look down on me more than he has any right to. Put him in my place—or in yours, for that matter—and see how high and mighty he’d be then. So no, Blaze and I aren’t exactly warm and fuzzy with each other. I expect we never will be. But there’re things I know that he doesn’t, and things I can do that I’ll wager he never could.”

Brimstone jumped off my shoulder, and I flinched. He landed on another shelf, poking around Gable’s belongings and sniffing.

“Things you could do to help the Guild?” Sure, I could have asked him to help me too, but this was bigger than me. World at stake, blah blah.

“And why would I do a thing like that?”

“Because as far apart as you and the Guild are, you’ve got one thing in common: You’re both against the Brotherhood.”

Gable pondered this for some time, his jaw stiff, and his back straight. “Having the same enemy ought to make you friends. But it doesn’t always work out that way, princess. I’ll always be soiled goods to them. And I’ll wager they’ve got Blaze and Cole and Talon hovering around you because you are, too.”

That stung more than it ought to, and I recoiled. “They’ve accepted me—Cole and me. We’re with them now.” My objections sounded weak and pathetic, like the protests of a small child, defending their actions.

“Conditionally,” Gable reminded. “Everything’s conditional in this world, Luna. Including your standing in the Guild.
