Chapter 34

Diamond was at the hospital crying and holding onto her mother for support. Gotta wasn’t in bad condition. He had been shot, it hurt, he couldn’t go home right away, but he was alive, and that’s what counted.

“What’s up who need to get fucked up?” Nathan sat beside Gotta’s bed.

“Some nigga named Keith.” Gotta lay on his back ashamed that he got shot.

“Do you want us to wait or ride without you?”

“You don’t even know these niggas.” Gotta smiled at his cousin.

“What up nigga?” K.K. walked up in the hospital room strutting like he was cool. He moved his hands around in a smooth gesture.

“K.K.” Nathan nodded his head to his baby brother.

“Little nigga.” Gotta said from his bed. Naji walked in the room and paused just beyond the door. Nathan looked at his brother. Naji didn’t make eye contact with Nathan. He looked around the room and walked closer to the bed. He looked down at Gotta.

“They hit you up?” He asked just to break the tension.

“Not really they just gave me a reason to try out these new guns that I copped the other day.” He was in pain, but wanted to give off the impression that he wasn’t a punk.

“I aint your brother?” Nathan stared at Naji.

“What’s up nigga?” Naji acknowledged him, but wanted to avoid responsibility for what he did. Nathan looked at Naji.

“Look at me.” Nathan sat up in his chair.

“I see you.” Naji never made eye contact with his brother.

“Nikki walked in the room with Cocoa and Jameka. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Naji. She looked over at Nathan then at Naji. She walked up to her younger brother.

“Naji.” His absence and the way it affected her fell from her lips and touched his heart.

“Nikki.” He spoke coolly. She reached out and grabbed him. She squeezed him and held him tight. Nathan smiled to himself watching the interaction.

“Excuse me, but there are too many people in this room.” The nurse looked at Gotta expecting him to understand.

“Yo you don’t see my peoples all shot the fuck up?” K.K. stood up and stared at the nurse.

“K.K.” Nikki grabbed him and walked away with him. Cocoa and Jameka left the room. Diamond followed them out the door.

Ten minutes later Gotta fell asleep leaving Naji and Nathan alone with each other to work out their personal problems.

“Nigga you shot me.”

“I didn’t mean to, shit got crazy, son it’s like.” Naji’s eyes watered up. “I had the gun. I thought that you were going to get scared, back down, or run, but you didn’t.” Tears ran down his face. “I was fucked up, I couldn’t face yall, and I didn’t think yall loved me no more. I fucked up son I just had to run.” He hung his head low in shame.

“I forgive you, you’re my little brother.” Nathan wrapped his arms around Naji. “I love you Naji, that’s my mutha fucking word. I love you kid.” Nathan held his brother crying his own set of tears.
