Chapter Fifteen

Maxine saw that she had a message on her cell phone when she got back to her desk in her office. She kept her pager on vibrate and her cell phone off whenever she was with a patient. They deserved her full attention. There was a message from Betina, so she dialed the number to the salon.

“Hair Today,” Joey said.

“It’s Maxine. Is Betina there?”

“She’s with a client, but she can usually trim locks and chat on the phone at the same time. Hold on. Oh, by the way,” he said in a hushed tone. “Whatever you said to her has made a huge difference. She’s been to work on time two days in a row now and she hasn’t been as spacey these past few days.”

“She went to the doctor for some tests yesterday,” Maxine said, “so hopefully she’ll be feeling better soon.”

“What? Yesterday? I don’t think so,” Joey said. “I was with her all day yesterday. She didn’t see any doctor.”

Momentarily speechless, Maxine eased down on the corner of her desk.

“We closed up the shop late and loaded all the stuff we needed for Blue Hair Night,” Joey continued. “Then we stopped for a quick dinner at the Bean Sprout Chinese place down the street. Trust me. She didn’t have time to see a doctor yesterday.”

Maxine gripped the phone so hard her hand began to hurt. She put the phone against her other ear and got more comfortable on the corner of her desk.

“Maybe she went to the doctor early.”

“I woke her up at seven,” Joey said.

“What time did she get to work?”

“About eight-thirty. She even picked up breakfast for us, but you know how it usually takes her forever to get ready in the morning. We both got to work early because we started packing things for Blue Hair Night before our first appointments of the day arrived.”

“When she got to the shop, did you notice a Band-Aid on her arm?”

“No. Not that I remember.”

“Then maybe she went to the doctor after leaving the restaurant yesterday evening.”

There was a pause. “Yeah, maybe,” Joey said skeptically.

That’s probably what happened, she thought. Betina left the restaurant and went to her appointment after work.

“Let me talk to her,” Maxine said.

“Wait a minute. Did she tell you she went to the doctor yesterday?”

“Let me talk to her.”

“Uh-oh. I hear polar cap-sized icicles in your voice. You have to forget whatever stupid thing I just said, Maxie.”

“Put her on the phone.”

“It’s for you,” Joey called across the salon, now suddenly very willing to get rid of the phone.

“Take a message,” Maxine heard Betina say.

“You better take this one.”

“Who is it?”

“Maxie.”

“Tell her I’ll call her back. I’m busy right now.”

“You need to tell her yourself.”

“What the—”

Maxine heard grumbling and then the light clickity-click sound of Betina’s heels across the tiled floor. Betina picked up the phone and said, “Hi, baby. Can I call you back? I’m in the middle of something.”

“I’m returning your call. I have a quick question for you.”

“Oh! I have one for you, too.
