As they continued to head east, Melanie watched the landscape change from mountainy to flatter with fewer trees. Although, to be honest, she wasn’t seeing much of it as her mind kept returning to the kisses. Milo’s mouth fit perfectly with hers. The woman’s lips were soft and warm, but a cautiousness let her know Milo had been restraining herself some. And if she hadn’t? Melanie wondered for the hundredth time. Where would things have gone? That was the big question. She had to admit, the kiss had made heat form in her stomach, with a tightness low on her body that wanted to try more. The physical reaction to being intimately close to Milo surprised her. When was the last time I was turned on with nothing but a kiss? Ever? Even thinking about what happened was arousing her in ways she couldn’t quite explain.

“Melanie,” she heard Milo say softly. “We need to talk for a minute.”

Turning from her gaze out the passenger window, Melanie hoped the blush she felt from thinking about Milo wrapped around her didn’t show. “What about?” she asked, guessing that after riding a few hours without speaking, the woman would want to address the elephant in the room. Or, in this case, the backseat, Melanie thought, suppressing a smile, not sure Milo would understand her humor.

In answer, Milo surprised her by pointing to an oncoming freeway marker. “That is what I want to address,” she said, and Melanie squinted to see what Milo referred to on the green sign. Then she saw words that bothered her greatly. They were nearing Albuquerque, New Mexico, which was fine, but the next city listed was Amarillo. As in Amarillo, Texas. The city was still three hundred miles away, but there could only be one reason Milo pointed it out. She wanted to go there.

Looking at Milo, she saw the woman kept stealing glances in her direction. “Are you saying there isn’t another way than to go through Texas?”

“Well…” she started, and Melanie could see the reluctance on her face. “Honestly, not really.” She sighed. “It’s too soon to start north and risk hitting snowy weather. We need to keep going on the I-40 a little longer.”

Melanie looked at her hands, thinking through the information. “I understand,” she said, then raised her gaze. “You probably think I’m being foolish about this.”

Furrowing her brow at the statement, Milo shook her head. “I don’t think that,” she said, then hesitated. “Or at least I don’t now.”

Loving the fact Milo was always painfully honest, Melanie had to laugh. “Oh, before this morning, you thought I was crazy?” she asked. “Everything changes with a kiss?”

Watching her, Melanie saw the woman blush. “No, I’m not saying that exactly,” she said. “I was thinking through what you said in Phoenix and didn’t want to take you into Texas without a discussion.” Melanie studied Milo’s face for a beat before unhooking her seatbelt and sliding across the wide seat until she was beside the woman. Clearly surprised, Milo looked at her for a second before refocusing on the road.
